Searching for Your Next Binge? Why Netflix’s 9-Part Thriller Should Be at the Top of Your List

A good murder mystery can really get your brain juices flowing with an intricately complex plot and the shifting suspicion with each new piece of evidence. Sometimes these movies also provide a running commentary on the existing social order and how it only takes one serial killing lunatic to shake it to its core.
Try imagining all this in a Scandinavian backdrop, a region with a relatively low crime rate, happy citizens, and a really calm and sedentary life. How would a killing spree affect the seemingly stable system there? How would a drunk and self-destructive cop put a stop to all of this?
All these questions are brilliantly answered by Netflix’s 9-Part Nordic noir that has taken the global charts by storm.

Why Netflix’s 9-part thriller makes for a good watch?
Netflix’s Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole is actually a resurrection (a successful one indeed) of a beloved character of the very famous book series by Jo Nesbø. Harry Hole, an Oslo Cop and the protagonist of Nesbø’s violent, deftly written crime novels, is a flawed hero with a good heart.
It was inevitable that Harry would appear on screen after tens of millions of books were sold. But it was Hollywood that took the first crack at it, and it was not a very good one. The 2017 thriller The Snowman, which starred Michael Fassbender, along with Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and J. K. Simmons, was a poor rendition of one of Nesbø’s books that did not do justice to Harry's character as well as the author's work.
But Netflix’s version does everything right that the 2017 movie did not. For starters, Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole has actual Scandinavians in the cast, so that is a step in the right direction. But the best thing that happened to the series was that Nesbø himself stepped into the production. All nine of the series' episodes are written by the famous Norwegian mystery writer, ensuring that the show never strayed away from his vision.
The outcome is a realistic, a bit gloomy, and brutally honest perspective on police work, all enveloped in a gripping narrative.
A plot embroiled in murderous mayhem and betrayal
The Devil Star, the fifth book in Jo Nesbø's novel series, serves as the source material for Netflix's Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole. In this tale, Harry is attempting to apprehend a serial killer who preys on women and leaves their dead bodies with severed fingers and a diamond star mark under their eyelids. The suspense and tension in the narrative rise tenfold when Harry suspects another detective of wrongdoing.

Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole is a character-driven drama that examines the dark side of police work because Harry's life is far from ideal, and he must manage his own battles with drinking and melancholy while juggling the investigations. All of this makes a pretty strong case for the Nordic noir to be a top entry in your watchlist.
