According to Deadline, Ricky Gervais recently arrived at the Annecy International Animation Festival on Thursday for a special presentation of his upcoming Netflix adult animation, Alley Cats. The audience packed into the massive 1,400-capacity Bonlieu theatre delivered a historic hero's welcome to the beloved British performer.

"Happy Birthday,” the packed audience even sang to the filmmaker to celebrate his 65th birthday today. The story chronicles the chaotic trials and everyday tribulations of a diverse group of stray British felines as they navigate modern society. Aside from writing and directing the 6-episode project, the comedian stars as a cynical ginger tomcat named Gus.

The exclusive presentation treated viewers to the first two episodes, establishing the core dynamic between the stray animals and a highly pampered domestic cat named Ponce. Gervais explained to Deadline that the show continues his artistic style from The Office, Extras, and After Life. He successfully combines his everyday observations of human life with his personal passion for animals.

The creativity behind Alley Cats

Ricky Gervais reached out to Morrissey and Johnny Marr directly for music clearance, aiming to ground the brief lifespans of the neighbourhood felines in a strong sense of existential pathos. He noted during an engaging post-screening discussion with Variety that the dialogue was recorded with the cast members sharing the same room to maintain a highly realistic, conversational flow.

“It’s recorded very differently from average [animation]. We were in a room at the same time, firing. I told them: ‘Don’t be ‘funny.” Everything is realistic – apart from the cats talking. I said: ‘Think of them as people, sitting on a couch and watching TV,’” he said. The primary creative objective behind the project remained entirely centered on fostering a deep, genuine connection between the audience and the animal characters.

“I want people to want them to survive. And they do. I just want them to love the cats,” he noted. He praised the streaming platform for commissioning the entire production based purely on a minimalist premise involving swearing stray cats navigating ordinary life.

“I should also say how great Netflix is, because I want a second season,” he said. The spectacular reception at Annecy guarantees that Alley Cats will stand out as another classic Ricky Gervais masterpiece.
