Erin Foster has revealed that her own engagement to Simon Tikhman inspired the proposal in Nobody Wants This season 3. The Netflix rom-com has spent three seasons pushing Joanne and Noah through tense dinners and meddling relatives. Fans have long suspected that some of the chaos came from real life, and Foster has now pulled out the home footage to settle the matter. The story behind it is more elaborate than any script.

While Joanne and Noah needed three seasons to get engaged, Foster needed one fake invitation and a barn full of conspirators.

Simon Tikhman proposed to Erin Foster in August 2019 by staging a fake vow renewal in Napa Valley, and Noah proposed to Joanne through a similar fake wedding in Nobody Wants This, season 3. Foster met Tikhman at a Los Angeles gym in 2018. The series is loosely based on their romance.

“So about a month before he proposed, we got this invitation to a wedding vow renewal,” Foster revealed on her Instagram.

She added, “And that’s how I got engaged to a psychotically romantic genius.”

Foster shared the backstory in an Instagram video on Wednesday, flipping through an invitation that listed attire and a weekend schedule. Tikhman called the trip a work thing and even arranged a manicure with her niece so her nails would be ready. Meanwhile, her sister Sara Foster flew to Napa with the ring from New York. At the vineyard, Foster felt relieved to miss the guests, who were supposedly on a wine tour, while her family hid inside a barn.

While Foster’s family jumped out of a barn, Joanne and Noah wait on Netflix to learn their future.

Netflix has not yet renewed Nobody Wants This for a fourth season. Season 3 premiered on October 22, and the streamer will likely study viewership before making a call. A decision could come in early November, although that window is only an estimate. Erin Foster has told Parade that she has more story to tell, especially about married life for a couple who found love later in life.

Co-showrunner Jenni Konner has hinted that the story continues, since Joanne and Noah married privately and have not yet faced the family expectations of a traditional wedding. Foster has confirmed the couple really did get married, and Kristen Bell and Adam Brody have both voiced enthusiasm about returning. If the writers reunite late in 2026 and production starts in spring 2027, the show could return in late 2027. Until Netflix decides, Nobody Wants This season 4 remains a hopeful maybe, while Simon Tikhman’s fake vow renewal stays the real-life proposal that gave Noah his big moment.
