Pierce Brosnan is stepping into a new kind of danger with Extraction 3, leaving behind the world of spies and shaken martinis for a Netflix action universe that rarely lets its heroes breathe. The former 007 is now joining forces with Chris Hemsworth, putting two generations of action stars on the same collision course. And with the details of Brosnan’s character still locked away, Netflix may already have something explosive hiding behind the curtain.
But what exactly has Brosnan signed up for, and why does his arrival suddenly make this next chapter feel much bigger?

Pierce Brosnan has joined Extraction 3 alongside Don Lee, Joe Taslim, Chi Lewis-Parry and Siena Agudong, with the five actors becoming the latest additions to Netflix’s action sequel, as reported by Deadline. Brosnan’s role, along with those of the other newcomers, is being kept under wraps, while Chris Hemsworth returns as Australian black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake. Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani are also returning, with the film currently shooting in Australia under director Sam Hargrave.

The third installment comes from the Russo Brothers’ AGBO and Hemsworth’s Wild State, continuing the franchise based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and illustrator Fernando León González. Hargrave, who directed the first two films, is back behind the camera, while David Weil is writing from a story by Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo. With Brosnan joining a cast that already includes Hemsworth, Elba, Farahani, and some of Asia’s biggest action stars, Netflix is clearly loading the next mission with serious firepower.
And the timing could not be more dangerous, because the last time we saw Tyler Rake, he was not exactly walking away from the battlefield.
Extraction has become a Netflix action powerhouse
The Extraction franchise has grown into one of Netflix’s most successful original movie properties, with the first film becoming a streaming phenomenon after its 2020 release. The movie reportedly drew around 90 million household views in its first four weeks, while Extraction 2 arrived in June 2023 and immediately dominated Netflix’s global movie chart with 42.2 million views in its opening week. Remarkably, the original film simultaneously climbed back to No. 2 with another 13.8 million views.

The franchise then made streaming history when both films appeared together on Netflix’s top 10 most popular English films list in August 2023. That success has pushed the streamer to expand the universe beyond Tyler Rake, with a live-action spin-off series titled Mercenary: An Extraction Series also in development.
Now, with Brosnan joining Hemsworth and Extraction 3 underway, Netflix is betting that the Tyler Rake saga still has plenty of ammunition left.
