Philippa Northeast believes the creative liberties taken in Netflix’s adaptation of My Brilliant Career pay tribute to Miles Franklin’s original novel. The novel tells an ambitious story about challenging the 19th-century norms that confined women to predetermined roles, while exploring one woman’s determination to forge her own path. Although the series is set in the same period and follows a young Australian woman torn between her family’s expectations and her own aspirations, it introduces several creative changes.
While these bold changes bring a new perspective on a familiar story, as Northeast explains, that may have been the aim of the Netflix adaptation.

Netflix’s My Brilliant Career is set in 1900s Australia and follows the same characters, Sybylla Melvyn and Harry Beecham, played by Philippa Northeast and Christopher Chung. However, the series makes several changes to the original book, bringing a more modern approach to the story while staying true to the spirit of the novel. As Northeast explained in her interview with TV Insider, these changes make Sybylla’s story feel more complete and meaningful.
“It gives different perspectives on the search for agency when you have other characters that are also searching for their own agency and under different challenges and expectations,” Northeast said.
“And also, the wonderful thing is that this is a story about defiance, so to be able to take this world and change it up but keep the spirit of it, keep the heart of it is exactly what should be done with a story about defiance,” she further added.

During the interview, she explained how these meticulous changes, made to make the story more accessible to more people, enriched the narrative while staying true to Miles Franklin’s novel. The changes begin with Harry Beecham, who is portrayed as of Chinese-Australian heritage rather than the English-Australian man portrayed in the book. Other crucial changes include the series developing storylines for sisters Nell and Betty, as well as introducing LGBTQ+ representation.
Apart from its bold and inspiring characters, the soul of Franklin’s novel also lies in its vivid descriptions of the Australian landscape, which were taken quite seriously by the series' crew.
Filming location of My Brilliant Career
The entire filming of Netflix’s My Brilliant Career adaptation took place in South Australia, with several real locations transformed to recreate the rural Australian setting of the early 1900s. For the interior scenes, production moved to Adelaide Studios. The series also makes the most of South Australia’s awe-inspiring landscapes, showing the beauty of the Australian bush, and was filmed in the Barossa region.

Another notable filming location was Yallum Park, which is a picturesque Victorian-era mansion near Penola in the state’s southeast. So, along with expanding its characters, representation, and world beyond the novel, the series attempted to stay true to the book by filming in awe-inspiring locations that resemble what Miles Franklin explained in her book. This gives the 6 part series a broader meaning without losing the rebellious spirit of Miles Franklin’s original novel.
