Inside Emily Henry's upcoming Netflix movie adaptations

Netflix has picked up Emily Henry's book Funny Story for a film adaptation. The streamer has also converted its already-in-the-works Happy Place adaptation from a TV series into a movie, per Variety.

Henry's on-screen dominion does not end there, as she also bagged two more film adaptations of her novels, Beach Read and Book Lovers, in collaboration with other studios and distributors. Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation marks the first of the 34-year-old author's five planned novel-to-screen adaptations as of now.

"I’m so thrilled where it wound up. I couldn’t name a specific thing that was killed off, but it’s so unimportant to me at this point," Emily Henry expressed to E! News about Brett Haley's adaptation of her novel for Netflix.

With Funny Story and Happy Place, Henry, who is named an executive producer, is getting to do it all over again with the thrilling bonus of penning the scripts herself. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina have already been recruited to produce the music for Happy Place.

"I feel so lucky to have found this home for these films, among people who believe deeply in the necessity and power of this kind of story," Henry told Tudum, reflecting on being able to reincarnate her beloved characters from her own pages to the screen all by herself this time.

What to expect from the plot of Funny Story and Happy Place?

Funny Story is a dazzling and romantic comedy about two people from opposite ends of the world whose lives are intertwined in a way that they cannot explain, and who eventually find that they have more in common than they thought. The plot revolves around Daphne, a children's librarian who is going through the pain of a broken engagement with Peter.

When Peter realizes too late that he still loves his childhood best friend, Petra, Daphne is left without a place to stay. There, she will be the new flatmate of Miles, Petra’s ex-boyfriend. The two of them come up with a mischievous fake dating plan to either take revenge on their exes or win them back, and in the process, they might find out something surprising about themselves.

Happy Place, which was first intended as a TV series, is now a feature film. It tells the story of Harriet Kilpatrick and Wyn Connor, a former couple who pretend to be in love during their last summer holiday with friends. Even though the couple split five months ago, they continue the charade for the sake of tradition, only to realize the uncomfortable truth about their broken hearts.

The duo faces the deeply hidden feelings that come up during the trip, exploring conflict, forgiveness, and introspection. Happy Place offers a deep dive into love, loss, and the complexities of relationships, adding yet another dimension to Emily Henry's oeuvre of romance novels, which make her the darling of literary adaptations by Netflix and other streaming services.
