When Netflix's A24 black comedy, Beef, debuted in April 2023, it caused a stir. The story of strangers whose road rage encounter turns into a devastating feud made for an engrossing and thrilling watch. Created by Lee Sung Jin and starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in the dual lead roles, the show became an instant hit on Netflix, dominating the global rankings for weeks. The positive audience response and award recognition practically forced the makers to go for a season 2.

After the wait of three years, the second season of Beef is here, and the trailer just stumped everyone, as did the strong performances by Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and others.

Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan play the husband and wife who own a country club. They have been married for quite some time, and now, with the passing of time, cracks have begun to develop in their relationship. Mulligan’s character seems to be addressing the issues in their marriage and how things might have reached a point beyond repair. 

The trailer showcases Oscar Isaac as a focused businessman who deeply cares about his country club, but when it comes to his wife, he is distant and kind of insensitive. In his character, Isaac fits really well as a deft business owner and an indifferent husband. Carey Mulligan steals the scenes with her emotional vulnerability as the suffocating wife. Other cast members, such as Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny, also leave lasting impressions in their brief appearances.

The plot of the upcoming season of Beef really starts when a Gen-Z couple, Ashley Miller and Austin Davis, accidentally record an unsettling altercation between Millennials Josh (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay (Carey Mulligan), specifically their employer and his wife. This unexpected incident leads the junior workers at the country club, who are recently engaged, to become entangled in the failing marriage of the General Manager and his wife. 

The trailer and its performances from the cast of Beef season 2, especially from Isaac and Mulligan, have made a strong case for the upcoming season. The drama and the chaos seem as palpable as they did in the first season. Only time will tell how it actually fares in comparison to the first one. The new season releases on April 16 on Netflix.
