In an interview with IGN, executive producer and Tomorrow Studios president Becky Clements, co-showrunner Joe Tracz, and writer Ian Stokes talked about many things, like the working experience with the mastermind behind the world of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, and the future of the Live Action adaptation of the series. One interesting thing that came out during the conversation was Karoo’s appearance in season 3.
“Karoo fans should you know get out their popcorn,” Joe Tracz said when asked if Karoo would be seen in season 3.
Initially, the conversation started when the host asked about Karoo’s absence from season 2, among other notable misses. He wanted to know why the beloved character did not make the cut alongside Vivi as he was an integral part of her undercover journey in the manga and anime.
“Here's the thing I will say about Karoo. We wrote Karoo into season two, but we did end up making the decision to cut Karoo,” Tracz had added.
The co-showrunner went on to explain his exclusion and stated that he had to cut Karoo out of the second season due to story reasons. Actually, it would not have made sense for Vivi to infiltrate the Boroque Works with her pet duck. This would have made the organization look naive and easy-going, which would have damaged their impact as a dangerous threat to the people of Alabasta and East Blue in general.
The reason seems to be valid enough, but Joe Tracz did not entirely cut Karoo out of the second season. He did add a reference to him in one of the scenes.
A subtle Karoo reference in One Piece season 2
In the same conversation, Joe Tracz says that the team tried to keep Karoo in spirits in season 2. He is referring to the scene in Little Garden where Vivi and Luffy are riding a dinosaur, and she opens up about her life in Albasta. Among the many things she talks about, Karoo is one of them. She talks about her loyal companion duck back in Alabasta named Karoo.

According to Tracz, this subtle reference was their way to tell fans of the series that they have not forgotten about Karoo and that they love the character too. Anyhow, he has given the big news of Karoo’s return, which is a great addition to the third season, whose first look is already out, considering the emotional as well as comedic impact of the character on the story.
