There is always a risk in trying to recreate past success. And when the source material is a classic like Pride and Prejudice, the scrutiny in a way comes within the territory. Netflix has recently taken this plunge with a new adaptation of the Jane Austen classic. Led by Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden, the limited series, Pride and Prejudice, has finally dropped its first full-length trailer. However, fans have already begun weighing it against its predecessors.

Netflix first announced the much-anticipated adaptation in late 2024. The series is directed by Euros Lyn and produced by Lookout Point. According to reports, this new take on Jane Austen’s 1813 classic aims to stay true to the original while also bringing something fresh to the table. It looks to explore storylines that previous adaptations may have glossed over.

Leading the cast are Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy. Academy Award winner Olivia Colman plays Mrs. Bennet and Rufus Sewell joins the cast as Mr. Bennet. The rest of the cast includes Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, Louis Partridge as Mr. Wickham, and Jamie Demetriou as Mr. Collins.

Despite the star-studded ensemble signed up to bring Austen's beloved characters back to the screen, many fans are not as thrilled. Turns out, Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr Darcy is back in the conversation, and fans are making it clear that his swoon-worthy portrayal is still in a league of its own.

Fans also took digs at Netflix and questioned whether Pride and Prejudice really needs another adaptation.

Fans remember the old Pride and Prejudice adaptations

The earliest major feature-film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel dates back to 1940, and the story has been reimagined for the screen several times since. However, the 1995 BBC miniseries is its most successful iteration so far in terms of critical acclaim and cultural impact, while the 2005 feature film has enjoyed the greatest commercial success. Many fans have given a shoutout to these two adaptations after seeing the new Netflix trailer.

"Eh that Mr. Darcy didn't make my heart race as much as Matthew Macfadyen Mr. Darcy".

"I wonder why @netflix don’t have the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice, for comparison before we watch this 2026 adaptation".

"I hoping for a wonderful adaptation, like the 1995 version. It will be fantastic to have another option to rewatch P&P. But, sorry Jack, I think that my forever Darcy is him."

Some fans also felt the Netflix adaptation is unnecessary.

"Old is GOLD >>"

"We do not need another one of these."

That said, there is still an audience, excited to see the new Darcy and Elizabeth.

"You said another pride & prejudice adaptation? I'M SO ON IT!! i'll watch every single time".

"Everything every middle aged woman needed."
