Netflix is expanding its YA universe with Sid & Zoey, a new supernatural romance from creator Jon Kasdan, with J.J. Abrams and James Wan among its executive producers. The eight-episode series arrives from Bad Robot and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, giving Netflix another genre hybrid designed to sit between coming-of-age drama, gothic mystery, and horror. With Netflix now giving its YA programming a dedicated hub, Sid & Zoey looks like a particularly deliberate addition to the streamer’s genre-driven pipeline.

The pieces are already on the board, from its unusual creative pedigree to its Mississippi setting and paranormal premise. Here is everything known about the series so far.

Netflix has a Supernatural powerhouse cast waiting in the wings

There is one important casting detail to know before any fancasting begins: Netflix has not announced a single cast member for Sid & Zoey yet. Reports from UPI and other industry sources confirm that casting remains undisclosed, meaning Sid and Zoey themselves have not been attached to actors.

Sid: No actor announced. He is described as a "sophisticated, seductive, and amoral teenager from New York," as per the official logline.

Zoey: No actor announced. She is the sharp-witted, punk-rock daughter of the local police chief.

John Shiban: Not a cast member, but a key creative figure. The Ozark writer and producer will co-showrun the series with Jon Kasdan.

The real casting story, therefore, is still waiting to happen. Given the project’s YA positioning and the genre pedigree behind it, the eventual choices for the title characters could reveal exactly how Netflix intends to market the series.

And then there is the mystery itself, which is where Sid & Zoey starts looking considerably stranger than a conventional teen romance.

Two teenagers, one perfect town, and something very wrong

The story follows Sid, a New York teenager sent to live with a police chief and his family in the Mississippi town where his mother grew up. There he encounters Zoey, the chief’s punk-rock daughter. Their mutual attraction quickly becomes tangled with something far more dangerous lurking beneath the town’s idyllic surface. That premise places the show in familiar Netflix territory while giving it a distinctly gothic engine.

The romance supplies the emotional hook, while the paranormal mystery provides the binge mechanism. It is the kind of genre collision that recalls the teen intrigue of Stranger Things without simply copying its formula. The eight-episode order also gives Kasdan and Shiban room to build the town as a character, slowly peeling back its secrets rather than treating the supernatural element as decoration.

Netflix’s decision is also strategically timed. The streamer recently launched a YA hub containing hundreds of original and licensed titles, with 23 YA titles reaching its global Top 10 during 2026. Sid & Zoey therefore is not arriving as an isolated experiment. It is part of a larger push to make young-adult programming a recognizable destination on the service.

When can fans enter Sid & Zoey’s dark world?

Netflix has not announced a release date or release window for Sid & Zoey. The series was ordered for eight episodes in August 2026, and current reporting does not provide a production schedule.

For now, the project remains one to watch rather than one to schedule. With Kasdan, Abrams, Wan, Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and Bad Robot attached, Sid & Zoey has enough genre firepower to become one of Netflix’s more intriguing YA bets.

As more casting and production details emerge, the picture should become much clearer. Until then, share your thoughts on Sid & Zoey and the supernatural romance Netflix is building.
