Netflix is always on the prowl for source materials it can use to create crowd-pulling IPs for its platform. One such endeavor was the streamer acquiring the rights to Jade Franks’ buzzy Edinburgh play Eat the Rich (But Maybe Not Me Mates X) last November. Interestingly, this is not the first project to be picked after making waves at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The streaming giant wants to develop it into a TV series, and for this, it has partnered with Adolescence director Philip Barantini’s production company.

Since the news broke, many are eagerly waiting for development updates on the project.

Last year's ambitious solo show, which won a prized Scotsman Fringe First award and received great praise, was a phenomenon at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Comedian Jade Franks' play Now Eat the Rich (But Maybe Not Me Mates X) is set to become a television series as envisioned by Netflix.

Additionally, according to Deadline, Netflix has reached a development agreement with Phillip Barantini's It's All Made Up Productions, which is led by the Adolescence director and Boiling Point executive Samantha Beddoe. In the same way that Richard Gadd adapted his one-man show into the Netflix blockbuster Baby Reindeer, Deadline believes Franks intends to adapt the piece herself.

It was also revealed in their report that Franks and her agent at Independent Talent Group have been meeting with producers in the United States and the United Kingdom. The adaptation is still in the early stages of development, and there is no assurance that it will be seen on screen, per per Deadline.

Jade Franks's experiences as a working-class undergraduate at Cambridge serve as the inspiration for the comedically insane play, Eat the Rich (But Maybe Not Me Mates X). It centers on Franks from the time when she was a first-year student from Liverpool in the north of England who balances the cultural shock of Oxbridge affluence with covert cleaning shifts.

The play, directed by Tatenda Shamiso and produced by JFR Productions, has received recognition for its examination of the follies of class, wealth, and belonging in the United Kingdom. It is currently on its brief run at the Soho Theatre in London after winning the Scotsman's Fringe First Award, the Holden Street Theatres Award, and the Filipa Bragủ Award. In the future, there might be more development updates on the project by Netflix.
