After The Witcher, Netflix is set to introduce another fantasy drama based on Dungeons & Dragons. Following Jeremy Irons’ 2000 fantasy film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) attempted to breathe new life into the franchise. While the film underperformed at the box office, it found a strong audience on streaming.

Now, the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons series has raised the hype among fans, with a Stranger Things’ director joining the project.

After the success of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on streaming, the franchise has received a clear green light for a series adaptation. While the cast for the show has not yet been decided, several big names are already attached to the project, including Drew Crevello. 

Shawn Levy, who has made major contributions to Stranger Things, will also be involved in Netflix’s Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms. Although the series could explore multiple story arcs, nothing has been confirmed regarding the number of seasons planned. 

The series was picked up for production in February 2024, but a release date has not yet been set. However, there is a chance that Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms could be released sometime after 2027. 

In an interview with Collider during the promotion of Stranger Things, director Shawn Levy has assured that the project is under development as the team continues to work on the story. 

“The reason why it is a challenging process is you're not adapting story IP," Levy added, "You're adapting a world and a lexicon and a spirit, but the story needs to be invented largely from scratch."

Until Netflix officially reveals the date for the production and release of the show, nothing is certain.

The plot of Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms has not yet been released. While the series will be set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, the story could be entirely different in the new series.

Fans will have to wait until Netflix drops more details about the show. Till then, this is a good opportunity to watch the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves or other thriller films.
