Netflix's anime library has quietly become a banquet where every genre finds a place at the table. From the emotional alchemy of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End to the cyberpunk spectacle of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the streamer has embraced stories that refuse to stay inside familiar genre boxes. Then arrived Delicious in Dungeon, an anime that looked like a fantasy role-playing adventure but turned every monster encounter into the equivalent of a Michelin-starred tasting menu.

The recipe sounds absurd on paper, but that is exactly what makes it unforgettable. Behind every simmering pot of basilisk stew and every grilled slime lies a surprisingly heartfelt fantasy epic that is far richer than its culinary gimmick suggests.

Inside the Dungeon: The story behind Netflix's Delicious in Dungeon

Based on Ryoko Kui's award-winning manga, Delicious in Dungeon follows adventurer Laios and his companions after a disastrous battle against the fearsome Red Dragon. Their expedition ends with the dragon devouring Laios' younger sister, Falin, forcing the party into a desperate rescue mission. There is one major problem. They have lost nearly all of their supplies and money. Rather than retreat, Laios proposes an idea that sounds ridiculous even by fantasy standards: survive by cooking and eating the monsters lurking inside the dungeon.

Studio TRIGGER elevates the concept far beyond comedy. Beneath the mouthwatering food animation sits a layered story about grief, family, ecology, and the delicate balance of an ecosystem hidden beneath the surface. As the narrative progresses, darker mysteries surrounding the Lunatic Magician Thistle, the ancient kingdom, and Falin's fate gradually reshape what initially appeared to be a lighthearted cooking adventure into one of fantasy anime's most emotionally rewarding journeys.

The adventure would not be nearly as memorable without a cast that feels like a tabletop role-playing campaign where every character unexpectedly becomes the audience's favorite.

Meet the cast behind the unforgettable adventurers

The Japanese voice cast brings remarkable personality to every expedition, balancing humor, danger, and heartfelt emotion throughout the series.

Kentaro Kumagai as Laios - The endlessly curious swordsman whose fascination with monsters often outweighs his common sense. His obsession with monster cuisine becomes the heart of the series.

Sayaka Senbongi as Marcille - A brilliant elven mage whose horrified reactions to Laios' cooking ideas create many of the anime's funniest moments while also anchoring its emotional core.

Asuna Tomari as Chilchuck - A skilled locksmith and trap specialist whose practical mindset constantly keeps the group grounded.

Hiroshi Naka as Senshi - The veteran dwarf whose encyclopedic knowledge of dungeon ingredients turns impossible meals into gourmet feasts.

Saori Hayami as Falin - Laios' gifted younger sister whose fate drives the central narrative and becomes increasingly important as the story unfolds.

Supporting performances from Akira Miki as Namari, Shinji Kawada as Shuro, Wataru Kato as Kabru, Rie Takahashi as Rinsha, and Miyu Tomita as Izutsumi further enrich the expanding fantasy world. Their interactions ensure the dungeon never feels populated by archetypes alone, but by adventurers carrying their own ambitions, regrets, and loyalties.

The feast is far from over, and Netflix has already confirmed when audiences can return to the dungeon.

When will Delicious in Dungeon Season 2 release?

Fans finally received the long-awaited update during Anime Expo 2026, where Studio TRIGGER officially confirmed that Delicious in Dungeon Season 2 will premiere worldwide on Netflix in October 2027. Alongside the announcement, the studio unveiled an ultra teaser visual featuring a transformed Falin under the control of the Lunatic Magician Thistle, hinting that the story is entering its darkest and most ambitious chapter.

Delicious in Dungeon has proven that on Netflix the best fantasy stories are sometimes served one meal at a time. It blends heartfelt character drama, meticulous world-building, and inventive cooking into an adventure unlike anything else in modern anime, making the wait for Season 2 all the more exciting.
