Netflix to Premiere Heartfelt Japanese Queer Drama About Identity and Courage Soon

Netflix is set to introduce a new voice to the global tapestry of LGBTQ+ movies through its acclaimed collection of international dramas. A new, nostalgic, and heartfelt queer movie from Japan is set to arrive on the streaming platform soon, following the success of 10 Dance, which got everyone hooked. And it is an obvious indication of Netflix's increasing commitment to telling inclusive stories that not only cross geographical borders but also connect hearts.

Adding to its robust selection of queer narratives, this movie explores the nuances of identity, transformation, and self-acceptance, which are bound to touch hearts deeply.

Yusaku Matsumoto's heartwarming LGBTQ+ film, This Is I, is set to arrive on Netflix. Its global premiere is slated for February 10, 2026, exclusively distributed by the streaming titan. The film is based on Haruna Ai’s autobiography, Subarashiki, Kono Jinsei, and Dr. Koji Wada’s book P---- Cutter.

A dramatic take on the real-life story of Haruna Ai, whose dream is to become an idol, This Is I is co-written by Masahiro Yamaura, with TOHO Studios in the production alongside Yoshihiro Sato as the executive producer. Its premise tackles a young person's complicated journey to self-acceptance and identity, and the deep connection with a doctor who aids her in that journey. 

This Is I will see rising star Haruki Mochizuki in the role of singer Haruna Ai, the real-life entertainer whose early struggles with identity, societal judgment, and the dream of becoming an idol represent the core of the story. The up-and-coming Japanese thespian has previously starred in Love Is Better the Second Time Around and Black Postman.  

Saito Takumi stars in the role of Dr. Wada Koji, the devoted physician, who is both a mentor and an ally. He has previously starred in The Kidnapping Day, Bullet Train Explosion, Hyochakusha, and Netflix's He’s Expecting. Kimura Tae as Haruna Ai's mother and Chihara Seiji as her father, along with Nakamura Ataru, Yoshimura Kaito, Megumi, and Nakamura Shido, contribute to the richness of the ensemble as the vibrant plotline promises authenticity, realism, and emotional connection.
