Netflix is about to bring one of manga's most influential stories to a new generation of viewers. The Ribbon Hero, a brand-new anime film inspired by Osamu Tezuka's legendary Princess Knight, premieres worldwide on August 8, reimagining one of the most important works in manga history for modern audiences. Often referred to as the Godfather of Manga, Tezuka helped shape the modern manga and anime industries through classics such as Astro Boy, Black Jack, and Princess Knight.

First published in 1953, Princess Knight became a landmark title that influenced generations of creators and is widely regarded as one of the foundational works of shōjo manga.

Now, more than seven decades later, Netflix is giving the beloved story a fresh new interpretation with The Ribbon Hero.

Netflix's modern reimagining of Osamu Tezuka's classic

Rather than serving as a direct adaptation, The Ribbon Hero takes inspiration from the world and themes of Princess Knight while telling a new story centered on Sapphire. The film follows the young heroine after her homeland, Silverland, is destroyed by a mysterious calamity known as Nergal. Forced into exile, Sapphire finds herself in the neighboring kingdom of Goldland, where a magical ribbon awakens extraordinary powers and transforms her into the Ribbon Hero.

The project is directed by acclaimed animator Yuki Igarashi, known for his work on Jujutsu Kaisen and Star Wars: Visions. The film also marks his feature-length directorial debut and is produced by anime studio OUTLINE. Character designs come from Kei Mochizuki, with creative contributions from Mai Yoneyama and art direction by Cédric Hérole.

The new adaptation also arrives at a time when interest in Princess Knight has been renewed, with many fans revisiting the story that first introduced Sapphire and helped establish the character as one of manga's most enduring heroines.

Why anime fans are paying attention

Beyond its connection to Osamu Tezuka's legacy, The Ribbon Hero has made significant buzz for its distinctive visual style and ambitious creative team. Netflix showcased the film as part of its major anime lineup at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. At the same time, trailers and artwork have drawn praise from anime fans online for their vibrant designs and fresh take on a classic property.

While the story introduces new elements, it retains the spirit of the original heroine whose courage and determination helped make Princess Knight a classic. With its blend of fantasy, action, and anime history, The Ribbon Hero is shaping up to be one of Netflix's most intriguing animated releases of the summer.
