Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House is suddenly gaining traction on Netflix again, and it is probably the best horror series to catch up on if you have somehow missed it. In a streaming landscape where Netflix often serves up everything from teen slashers and supernatural mysteries to prestige psychological horror, Mike Flanagan’s 2018 masterpiece still towers over the genre. Eight years later, it remains the rare horror show that scares audiences as effectively as it breaks their hearts.

Many horror series rely on jump scares, shadowy monsters, or elaborate mythology. Hill House has all of that, but its real horror comes from the ghosts people carry long after they leave the house behind. The scares linger because they are attached to memories, regrets, and family wounds that never fully heal.

Why The Haunting of Hill House still feels like peak Netflix horror

Based on Shirley Jackson’s legendary 1959 novel of the same name, the series follows the Crain family across two timelines. One explores their traumatic childhood summer in the mysterious Hill House, while the other follows the siblings as adults still haunted by what happened there. The ensemble cast includes Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, Victoria Pedretti, Timothy Hutton, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas, all delivering performances that elevate the material far beyond conventional horror.

Across ten episodes, Flanagan carefully layers supernatural dread with family drama, culminating in one of television’s most emotionally devastating finales. The source material has long been considered sacred within horror circles. In his 1981 non-fiction study Danse Macabre, Stephen King called Jackson’s novel a "near-perfect" masterpiece, praising its emphasis on psychological scare over b****-and-guts spectacle.

When Netflix released Flanagan’s adaptation in 2018, King offered equally high praise, writing that although he is not usually fond of revisionist adaptations, this one was "close to a work of genius."

If ten episodes of Hill House are not enough, the story is preparing to haunt audiences all over again. More than six decades after Shirley Jackson published her landmark novel and eight years after Mike Flanagan's acclaimed Netflix adaptation, the eerie halls of Hill House are stepping off the screen and onto the stage.

The Haunting of Hill House is headed to theaters across the U.K.

The next chapter of The Haunting of Hill House arrives this fall with a major U.K. stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel. Written by Olivier and BAFTA Award winner Stef Smith and directed by Martin Constantine, the production is being helmed by Wiltshire Creative in association with Theatr Clwyd. The production launches at Salisbury Playhouse on September 11, 2026, where it will run through October 3 before continuing a nationwide tour.

The tour then moves to Richmond Theatre from October 6 to October 10, followed by Theatr Clwyd from October 13 to October 17. Theatre Royal Brighton from October 20 to October 24, will be next, followed by Palace Theatre Manchester from October 27 to October 31. For the final tier, it will be Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse from November 3 to November 7, and the conclusion at Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre from November 10 to November 14.

Laurence J. Hyman, Shirley Jackson's son, welcomed the adaptation and said he was thrilled to see his mother's enduring legacy continue in a new form. Whether you are a lifelong horror fan or simply searching for your next Netflix binge, The Haunting of Hill House remains essential viewing. Few shows balance horror, tragedy, and emotional depth so effectively. If you have already visited Hill House, now might be the perfect time to return.
