Netflix is actively developing a feature-length adaptation of Gary Paulsen’s acclaimed 1987 young adult survival novel, Hatchet, per Variety. The film will be written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Derek Cianfrance, widely recognized for his work on movies like Blue Valentine (2010) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). Production duties will be handled by Andrew Mittman, whose production banner, 1.21, is the force behind Netflix's hit series Wednesday.
Originally published in 1987, Hatchet received the prestigious Newbery Honor and endures as a celebrated staple of children’s literature. The narrative centers on 13-year-old Brian Robeson, who finds himself completely isolated in the Canadian wilderness following a plane crash, armed with nothing more than a hatchet gifted by his mother. Following the initial novel's success, Paulsen expanded the property into a five-book collection that features The River (1991), Brian’s Winter (1996), Brian’s Return (1999), and Brian’s Hunt (2003).

The cinematic adaptation is moving forward in close collaboration with Gary Paulsen’s estate, which carefully guarded the intellectual property and kept it off the market for years before ultimately choosing Cianfrance to helm the project, as reported by Variety. The estate is repped by Jennifer Flannery and Sandy Weinberg, both of whom are attached as executive producers alongside Ruth Wright Paulsen and James Wright Paulsen. Prior to this new feature development, the book's only previous screen adaptation was the 1990 television film A Cry in the Wild.
Netflix, like many big Hollywood studios, is big on film adaptations and has many projects based on classic and modern literary works in the pipeline, some ready to come out this year.
Netflix’s film adaptation slate for 2026

However, their 2026 slate still has some much-anticipated titles in the wings, waiting to be dropped.

There is a war drama based on Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 non-fiction bestseller, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, coming up on October 22. The film features Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis in key roles. Another most-looked-forward-to title is Pride and Prejudice, adapted once again, but this time as a miniseries featuring Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet.
