Wednesday, premiering on Netflix this Halloween season, has been making a lot of buzz lately. The eight-episode series has grabbed all the headlines for being associated with The Addams Family

The Addams Family has had a journey of its own in the entertainment industry. 84 years back, the famous household made its presence felt in the pages of The New Yorker. It was the cartoonist Charles Addams who introduced the characters to the world.

Since then, the Addams Family has been used in a number of ways. They made it to a TV show in the 1960s, while the family was also presented in a mega-budget movie in the 90s. Apart from being inspired by the famous tv show and movie, Wednesday has also grabbed eyeballs due to Tim Burton.

How did Millar and Gough convince Tim Burton to be a part of Wednesday Netflix?

Burton didn’t associate with the 1991 Addams Family movie. Thus, his presence in Wednesday as both director and executive producer came as a surprise for the fans. It wasn’t easy for the showrunners, Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, to get Burton on board.

However, the renowned director seemed impressed with the first-episode script and gave his nod quickly.

“He was interested in where it was going, the mystery of the show. He really loved that you had time to be with Wednesday and explore the character and you didn’t have to, you know, wrap things up in an hour and 45 minutes,” Gough told Vanity Fair.

Millar reflects on the comparison between Wednesday and The Addams Family

Meanwhile, Millar and Gough also reflected on the similarities between Wednesday and previous adaptations of The Addams Family. While the comparison is inevitable for Wednesday, the showrunners want the audience to perceive it as “an eight-hour Tim Burton movie.” They denied considering the show as a reboot to remake of the famous household.

“It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing. It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim,” Millar added.

Netflix describes its new venture as a sleuthing and supernaturally infused mystery. The show will dive deep into Wednesday Addams’ life as a student at the Nevermore Academy.
