For years, Netflix has enjoyed an era of endless growth, treating bottomless content budgets and rapid expansion as simply part of doing business. But lately, with Wall Street breathing down its neck and viewer numbers not quite keeping up with lofty expectations, the vibe at corporate headquarters has shifted. Instead of chasing limitless scale, leadership is suddenly all about streamlining and cost-efficiency to keep investors happy ahead of the earnings report.

To make those numbers look better on paper, the company is quietly prepping a restructuring plan that will trim about 5% of its global team, according to recent reports.

Netflix eyes 5% staff cuts

According to a recent report by Puck News, Netflix is reportedly gearing up to restructure its operations and streamline its workforce, potentially eliminating around 850 positions - roughly 5 percent of its 17,000-strong global staff. While an official announcement could drop as soon as next week, the streaming titan has not yet publicly confirmed the planned cuts.

Netflix's stock has faced headwinds following a slowdown in viewer metrics and the collapse of its ambitious, $72 billion bid for Warner Bros. Discovery - an uncharacteristic pursuit of a massive mega-merger that deviated from its traditional preference for organic expansion. All eyes will now turn to the company’s upcoming October 20 earnings report, where leadership is expected to outline its strategic vision for reigniting growth and reassuring anxious shareholders.

If the what Puck News reported comes to pass, these layoffs would mark one of the company's largest staffing reductions since its 2022 cutbacks, which were triggered by a sharp dip in subscriber growth and stalling revenue. The impending reorganization comes amid mounting investor pressure for co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters to boost user engagement and shore up confidence in the company's long-term trajectory.

Netflix spending cash on tech amid job cuts reports

In March 2026, Netflix acquired InterPositive - an AI-driven filmmaking startup launched by actor and director Ben Affleck. While Bloomberg reported that the transaction could reach up to $600 million through performance-based earn-outs, the upfront cash outlay was significantly lower. InterPositive specializes in advanced post-production tools that empower filmmakers to seamlessly alter existing footage, enabling tasks like scrubbing unwanted objects from a scene or altering backgrounds, rather than autonomously generating entire cinematic projects from scratch.

This strategic purchase stands as one of Netflix's largest bets on artificial intelligence to streamline production workflows, mirroring a broader industry push to leverage tech for cost efficiency and enhanced output. Even so, analysts note no direct correlation has been established between these AI investments and the rumored job cuts, especially since Netflix has yet to officially confirm the layoffs or specify whether technical or production divisions will be impacted by the reorganization.
