Netflix’s Live-Action Scooby-Doo Series Secures April Filming Date: All Latest Updates

scoobTranslating a cartoon legend into live action is never a casual exercise, especially when that legend happens to be a talking Great Dane with a nose for trouble. Scooby-Doo has trained generations to expect spooky corridors, absurd disguises, and mysteries that collapse under the weight of truth. Bringing that animated language into the real world requires restraint, intention, and a deep understanding of why the formula worked in the first place.

Hardly any animated icons have remained as quietly persistent as Scooby-Doo, now poised to claim a fresh address on streaming.

Netflix is officially opening the door to a live-action Scooby-Doo series, with filming to begin from April of 2026. Confirmed in March 2025, the project marks the franchise’s first-ever live-action television adaptation, expanding its long history beyond animation and early-2000s cinema. Scooby-Doo has survived since the late 1960s by adapting to each generation, and this move reflects a calculated evolution rather than a nostalgic gamble.

This new series, however, is built for serialized storytelling, with 8 episodes confirmed, according to What’s On Netflix. The project was first adopted in April 2024, with Netflix taking nearly a year before issuing an official greenlight, now with a finalized show name.

The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television in partnership with Netflix, with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serving as showrunners and writers under their Midnight Radio banner, alongside André Nemec, Sarah Schechter, and Jeff Pinkner. Greg Berlanti also joins as an executive producer.

“One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cells. Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation,” Greg Berlanti said, speaking on the project, as per What's On Netflix.

The question now shifts from if Scooby-Doo can work again, to how it will redefine itself.

A new mystery begins, Scooby-Doo cast, plot, and new title

The series may arrive under a new working title. Production Weekly Issue 1484 lists the project as SCOOBY DOO: ORIGINS, though Netflix has not officially confirmed the name and continues to refer to it simply as Scooby-Doo. The title, however, aligns closely with the show’s narrative direction.

Netflix describes the series as a modern reimagining and an origin story with a structural twist. Rather than beginning with an already-formed Mystery Inc., the show introduces a new kid in town, reshaping how Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and Scooby-Doo first come together. The e season will feature all five core characters.
