Netflix subscribers will no longer be able to stream Jaws, Jaws 2, and Jaws 3-D starting Friday, May 1, 2026, as these will leave on April 30. This departure marks the end of an era for horror enthusiasts who enjoy marathoning the shark-infested franchise. These films collectively defined the survival horror genre by turning a simple beach vacation into a high-stakes battle for life.
According to Box Office Mojo, despite a modest production budget of $9 million dollars, Jaws (1975) became a global phenomenon that earned over 490 million dollars. Its legacy was further cemented at the 1976 Academy Awards, where it secured three prestigious wins out of four nominations.
Critics and fans alike remain enamoured with the thriller, evidenced by its stellar 97 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Each instalment in the series explores the terrifying reality of deadly Great White sharks terrorising various coastal communities and tourist destinations. As the calendar turns to May, the streaming giant will officially remove these iconic sightings from its library.
The franchise evolved significantly as different creative minds took over the director's chair for the sequels.
New directors and diminishing returns
Jaws 2 arrived in theatres on June 16, 1978, attempting to recapture the lightning in a bottle of the original. Directed by Jeannot Szwarc, the sequel followed Chief Brody as he faced yet another aquatic menace near the same traumatized town. While it performed well commercially, it struggled to meet the impossibly high critical standards set by its predecessor.
The third instalment, Jaws 3-D, took a different approach by moving the terror to a Florida marine park. Directed by Joe Alves and released on July 22, 1983, it utilized then-novel three-dimensional technology to immerse the audience. However, the gimmick and the change in setting resulted in a much colder reception from both fans and professional movie critics.

These sequels represent the industry's early attempts to build a continuous horror universe around a central monstrous figure. Even though the later films lacked the touch of Spielberg, they remain essential viewing for completionists and genre historians. Make sure to catch these varying interpretations of the deep-sea predator before they sink into the streaming abyss.
