Netflix has struck gold with KPop Demon Hunters, and the streaming giant is ready to let its animated musical keep singing. The film became Netflix’s most-watched original movie of all time, with hundreds of millions of views and 52 consecutive weeks on the global Top 10. Its anthem 'Golden' also topped charts, while the film collected major awards, including an Oscar for Best Original Song.
And with that kind of success, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is getting the royal treatment, trading streaming screens for a theatrical release.

The Hollywood Reporter has shed more light on Netflix’s plans to take KPop Demon Hunters 2 to theaters, revealing that the sequel has secured a traditional, full theatrical release. According to the trade publication’s October 20 report, former Netflix film chief Dan Lin helped negotiate the arrangement before his departure. The deal signals a major big-screen upgrade for the streaming giant’s animated sensation.
However, this theatrical plan was not entirely unexpected. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos had already discussed the sequel’s cinema ambitions at the Bloomberg Screentime event in Los Angeles on September 30, 2026. Sarandos promised a “very broad theatrical release” for the upcoming 2029 film, adding that Netflix intended to give it a longer theatrical window before bringing it to the streaming platform.

The Hollywood Reporter’s latest report provides further confirmation that Netflix is preparing to give its hit franchise a substantial cinema run. While the company has not officially announced the precise rollout schedule, the reported agreement points to a more traditional theatrical strategy. After KPop Demon Hunters conquered streaming, its sequel could be poised to make an equally loud entrance on the big screen.
Among KPop Demon Hunters’ many achievements, a theatrical release feels like a smart next move, especially after the film proved its box office potential without a traditional cinema run.
KPop Demon Hunters' box office success
KPop Demon Hunters proved that a streaming sensation could pack theaters without following Hollywood’s usual playbook. In August 2025, the animated musical’s sing-along edition earned an estimated $18 million to $19.2 million domestically, beating Weapons to claim the weekend’s No. 1 spot. It achieved the feat despite playing on roughly 1,700 screens, with more than 1,000 sold-out screenings.

The theatrical run ultimately brought in $24.3 million domestically and $24.7 million worldwide, turning a limited cinema engagement into a remarkable box office milestone. By then, the film had already amassed more than 210 million Netflix views, giving its sing-along screenings a built-in audience. For Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters 2 getting a full theatrical release looks like a smart encore.
