Netflix continues pushing deeper into live sports, with football becoming an important part of its expanding broadcast strategy. The streamer’s biggest upcoming test arrives with the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, which will mark its first Women’s World Cup broadcast.

With the tournament carrying enormous global interest, Netflix is now looking to build a high-profile studio team. Two of the biggest names in women’s soccer have reportedly entered those discussions.

Rapinoe and Marta lead Netflix’s broadcast strategy

Netflix has held talks with former United States women’s national team star Megan Rapinoe about becoming a studio analyst for the 2027 tournament, according to reporting from The Athletic. Rapinoe won two Women’s World Cups with the United States and made 203 international appearances during her career.

The former star already has experience behind the microphone through A Touch More, the podcast she previously hosted with Sue Bird. She has also developed a media presence through Why Are You Like This?, giving Netflix an established personality with extensive experience discussing sport and culture.

Marta is also in early discussions with Netflix, as The Athletic has revealed, although her situation depends on whether she plays for Brazil at the tournament. The Brazilian icon will be 41 during the 2027 World Cup and remains an active NWSL player. FIFA lists Marta as the all-time leading scorer in Women’s World Cup history, adding considerable historical weight to her potential involvement.

Netflix’s interest in elite soccer voices comes as its recent NFL experiment demonstrates the enormous audience available for live sports.

Netflix’s Australian NFL Broadcast delivers record viewership

Netflix’s first NFL regular-season game in Australia provided a major audience test for the streamer. The San Francisco 49ers’ 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams averaged 18.5 million viewers in the United States and 21.7 million globally, according to Nielsen data. The broadcast peaked at 21.3 million U.S. viewers and ranked among the three most-streamed Thursday Primetime NFL games.

The game also reached 4 million viewers among people aged 18 to 34, marking Netflix’s highest non-Christmas streaming delivery for an NFL regular-season game. More than 340 million social impressions and 14.5 million engagements were recorded across Netflix and NFL social channels.

The numbers provide useful context for Netflix as it prepares for 32 days of Women’s World Cup coverage. Bringing figures such as Rapinoe and potentially Marta into the broadcast team would give the streamer recognizable voices with deep connections to the sport.
