Netflix Green Lights '3 Body Problem' for Two Installments More After a Massive Success of Season 1

Netflix’s penchant for science fiction began way back, but with the release of 3 Body Problem, the streaming giant attracted a hub of sci-fi buffs. Although it is the second live-action adaption after the Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth’s Past, sci-fi geeks were left craving more when, at last, the sail malfunctioned, sending Will’s cryogenically frozen brain off course. However, Netflix has called the troop of survivors who made it through the first season to hold their breath just a little longer as the Netflix original has earned the green light for further seasons.

Not only has the streaming giant announced a second season but also confirmed a third season, indicating that the battles with the San-Ti cannot be contained within a limited timeframe.

On Friday, May 31, during the official Television Academy panel for 3 Body Problem at the Netflix FYSEE space at Sunset Las Palmas in Los Angeles, executive producers, showrunners, and writers David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo confirmed the show’s renewal for both a second and a third season. Weiss hinted that while season 1 encompassed much of what the creators loved from the book, the second season would delve into the core reasons behind making the show.

Benioff, Weiss, and Woo expressed their excitement about being able to complete the story they intended to tell. Weiss further noted that the team always aimed to reach the final page of the third book. Therefore, with Netflix's approval, they are thrilled to see their vision come to fruition. Additionally, this renewal allows them to present the entire saga of the San-Ti and humans to fans without a 400-year wait.

Netflix is currently on a streak of renewing its series, and following The Vince Staples Show came 3 Body Problem. A few weeks ago, during Netflix’s upfront presentation, the streamer hinted at the renewal of 3 Body Problem by teasing “additional episodes.” However, creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo did not label these additions as the second season.

This led fans to believe that the new episodes would be part of the first season, rather than a new season, based on their conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. The showrunners mentioned that they are currently writing the next season and noted that they spent four years making the first season and plan to spend the next three years completing the story. Despite the initial uncertainty, the green light now confirms that 3 Body Problem will return with not one, but two consecutive seasons.
