Netflix is raiding Brazil’s entertainment vault, and Globo is opening the doors to some of its biggest titles. The new licensing deal brings 18 wide-ranging Globo titles to Netflix, led by Walter Salles’ Oscar-winning drama I’m Still Here. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Globo is Latin America’s largest media conglomerate, renowned for its television production and internationally popular telenovelas.

The agreement marks the biggest licensing deal between Globo and Netflix to date, giving the streaming giant an even bigger slice of Brazil’s entertainment landscape.

Into Netflix and Globo's mouth-watering deal

The deal, as reported by Variety, has some serious awards-season pedigree, with Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here leading the cinematic lineup. The Academy Award-winning drama is joined by India – A Love Story, the celebrated telenovela created by Glória Perez and directed by Marcos Schechtman. The 2009 International Emmy winner adds a touch of television royalty to a package spanning different formats and storytelling traditions. It even includes Vitória, overall 14 feature films, 3 telenovelas, and 1 series.

Netflix subscribers will not have to wait long to see the new arrivals, either. The titles are scheduled to begin rolling out in December 2026, with releases continuing through mid-2027. Rather than dropping the entire collection at once, the staggered rollout gives the streaming platform fresh Brazilian programming to introduce over several months.

The partnership also reflects a broader shift in the streaming business. Guy Bisson, executive director at Ampere Analysis, noted to Variety that licensing spending is growing while investment in original production remains flat. As attracting subscribers becomes more challenging, content owners are increasingly opening their libraries to other platforms instead of keeping titles exclusive indefinitely.

Netflix has been experimenting with everything, such reality formats like The Stanford Prison Experiment, but its Globo partnership shows that sometimes, the smartest move is letting someone else bring the stories.

How the deal is mutually beneficial for Netflix and Globo

For Globo, the agreement opens another door to international audiences without requiring the Brazilian media giant to abandon its own streaming ambitions through Globoplay. Netflix brings the global reach, while Globo supplies the locally rooted storytelling that has made its productions distinctive. It is a chance to turn Brazilian creativity into a more valuable export while expanding its audience beyond domestic borders.

Netflix, meanwhile, gets a ready-made collection of Brazilian films, series, and telenovelas at a time when international stories are finding audiences worldwide. Previous successes such as 3% and the more recent hit Caramelo have helped demonstrate the appeal of Brazilian storytelling. With both companies bringing different strengths to the table, the 18-title agreement offers a practical win for Netflix and Globo alike.
