Recently, while announcing its Annecy lineup, Netflix revealed that the animated Ghostbusters series will debut in 2027 on the platform. Additionally, a new executive producer has joined the series, someone who has been an integral part of the universe. Dan Aykroyd, who wrote the first two Ghostbusters movies and appeared in all five, has joined the production team.

Elliott Kalan, a co-host of the well-liked podcast The Flop House and a veteran of The Daily Show, is writing and executive producing the project. Ben Hibon (Star Trek: Prodigy), Gil Kenan (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Amie Karp (The Croods), and Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) are also executive producers on the project.

Four years ago, rumors about the show surfaced; it was an extension of the universe that began over forty years ago with Aykroyd's original. The Ghostbusters IP has expanded greatly since then. For now, Netflix has kept all the other key details like the title, the cast, and even the storyline of the animated series under a giant tarp of mystery.

The Real Ghostbusters, an animated series that ran for six actual seasons and received an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes Popconometre, debuted on ABC in 1986. The 173-episode series (including syndication and the rebranded Slime! cartoon) served as a launchpad to Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski's career. Ten years later, in 1997, the series was brought back to life as Extreme Ghostbusters, with an older Egon in charge of a fresh group of Ghostbusters in college.
