Animation often feels most magical when it builds an entire world from the smallest details, and some stories immediately stand out just from that craft alone. Netflix's upcoming I Am Frankelda is already getting noticed for exactly that, with its newly released first trailer offering a striking glimpse into a dark and imaginative new vision. The arrival of this film is also important as it is the first feature-length stop-motion film produced in Mexico.

With the first trailer now out, attention has quickly shifted to the haunting story at the center of the upcoming fantasy.

It’s time to enter a world of dark and beautiful monsters. Ever since the news broke that Netflix had acquired the rights to the gorgeous stop-motion animated feature I Am Frankelda, the fans have been waiting for the first proper look. The wait is finally over, as Netflix has released a brand new trailer, gorgeous stills, and striking key art ahead of the film’s global debut on June 12, 2026.

Set in 19th-century Mexico, I Am Frankelda is the story of Frankelda, a gifted writer whose dark stories are overlooked and ignored. It looks nothing short of epic, as visually it’s like Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas painted in vivid color. I Am Frankelda, brought to life by the talented Ambriz brothers, promises to be a visually stunning journey through 19th-century Mexico and the deepest, darkest corners of a writer’s subconscious.

“Forced to suppress her voice, she refuses to give up, even as many try to silence her. But when she is thrust into her subconscious, the very monsters she created come to life,” the official synopsis of the animated film reads.

As its June premiere gets closer, the film arrives with growing attention around both its groundbreaking place in Mexican animation and the imaginative world it brings to life.
