Working at Netflix can be financially rewarding, but the company's top-of-market salaries come with a significant caveat: their jobs could disappear at any moment. The company has a reputation for handling dismissals with clinical efficiency, bypassing traditional performance improvement plans (PIPs) and presenting exits as respectful, mutual business decisions. That approach became particularly relevant in April 2022, when Netflix stunned Wall Street with a loss of 200,000 subscribers in Q1. Now, another wave of layoffs has brought Netflix's high-stakes employment culture back into the conversation.

This is its biggest round of layoffs since 2022, with a thousand employees losing their jobs.

Netflix announces its largest workforce cut in years

Netflix is laying off around 1,000 employees, or roughly 6% of its global workforce, in its largest round of job cuts since 2022, The Wall Street Journal reports. Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos announced the cuts to employees in a Wednesday morning email, a week ahead of the company's third-quarter earnings report. The decision comes as the streamer grapples with slowing viewer engagement and a stock price that has fallen by more than 40% in the past year.

The planned cuts, similar to Disney, represent a sizable reduction for Netflix, which had around 16,000 full-time employees in 2025. The move comes right when investors are keeping a close eye on viewer engagement after it grew by only 2% in early 2026. As per reports, the layoffs are expected to disproportionately affect the product, technology, legal, and human resources departments.

The downsizing signals an aggressive realignment of Netflix’s capital allocation priorities too.

Netflix’s layoffs could reshape its future

Netflix spent years enjoying a valuation comparable to that of Silicon Valley's fastest-growing technology companies. With revenue growth and viewer engagement now slowing, however, the streamer faces greater pressure to demonstrate financial discipline and protect its margins. But the company is not simply cutting costs. It is also competing for audience attention through live sports, video podcasts, and creator-led programming that can challenge YouTube's dominance. WWE's Monday Night Raw, NFL games, and partnerships with social media personalities are all part of this broader push.

Netflix's decision to cut software engineering and product roles raises questions about whether the company is shifting its focus from innovation to operational efficiency. Its celebrated “sports team” culture also looks different with the mass layoffs and the Keeper Test, which encourages managers to assess whether employees are indispensable to their teams. These practices can create an atmosphere of uncertainty in which even high-performing engineers may question their long-term job security at this point.
