Netflix Confirms 'The Empress' Season 3 Release Window for Its Final Chapter

Netflix has been keeping history buffs and period-drama fans thoroughly entertained with the award-winning The Empress. Season 1 stayed in the global Top 10 of non-English shows for five weeks, and Season 2 went even further, cracking the Top 10 in 84 countries and topping charts in 10. After two seasons packed with scandal, intrigue, and sweeping romance, Season 3 was officially greenlit in January 2025.

And now, the streaming giant has finally dropped hints on the release of the German-language period drama's third season that might only leave fans counting more days until the return of the royals.

At Netflix’s What’s Next? 2026 showcase in Berlin, the streaming giant revealed that the period drama The Empress could return in late 2026. The Fall/Winter timeline mentioned at the event hinted at a November or December release. But fans must also brace themselves for a bittersweet farewell, as this season will conclude the story of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz.

As for the production, filming for the series began in Spain on September 8, 2025, as per The Prague Reporter. The production seemed to have made full use of Prague’s historic streets while also filming in the Barrandov Studios. Season 2 leaned heavily on the city’s cinematic charm, and season 3 looks set to continue promises, even more sweeping visuals, and drama in late 2026 as per What's on Netflix.

Until then, fans are left eagerly awaiting the next chapter and wondering where the story will take the royals in season 3.

The first two seasons of The Empress focused on romance and the power struggles at court, and now, the final season will take a more intense turn for the empire and its rulers. The story picks up after the Sardinian War, with Emperor Franz returning from the front lines, struggling with trauma and the guilt of countless lost lives. Meanwhile, Elisabeth will be shown struggling to save her marriage and the empire.

The show also promises historic details such as Elisabeth’s declining health and much more.  As tensions rise and the pressures of duty and love collide, Elisabeth will leave Vienna to start the journey that is well known in history. With the empire teetering and its leaders facing their greatest trials, this dramatic conclusion in this six-part finale is a much-awaited one.
