Outer Banks turned treasure hunting, teen chaos, and sunburnt rebellion into appointment television, making the Pogues feel like summer had learned to fight back. John B, Sarah Cameron, Kiara Carrera, Pope Heyward, JJ Maybank, and Cleo delivered chases, lost gold, dangerous rivals, and cliffhangers, leaving fans aching for another reckless ride through the Outer Banks. While fans have a final season to look forward to, Netflix has added an extra sweet treat.

But that Pogue-sized yearning may finally be cut short, as Netflix has revealed plans for an Outer Banks prequel, promising another treasure-filled summer.

Deadline has broken the news that Outer Banks creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke are developing Kildare, a prequel set two decades before the hit Young Adult series. The new chapter will explore how Kildare became divided between its haves and have-nots, digging into the roots of the island community’s social hierarchy.

The idea has been quietly brewing for years, with Jonas Pate first discussing the potential prequel in 2023 and revisiting it in 2024. Now, with Outer Banks approaching its fifth and final season, the creators have finally had room to push the offshoot forward. Netflix has formally entered development, and the project is gaining momentum.

Josh Pate confirmed to Deadline that the team is already working on the script alongside Netflix, making Kildare considerably more than a dusty idea sitting in a writers’ room. The creator described the collaboration as a focused effort to make the story as strong as possible. For fans invested in Kildare’s history, the prequel could finally uncover what shaped its most enduring divisions.

Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks’ Season 5: Release Date, Cast, and Plot Details

With Harlan Coben breaking his no-second-season rule and the Outer Banks prequel announcement, there is plenty to wonder about which mysteries the prequel could finally solve.

What mysteries could be solved through the Outer Banks prequel

The Royal Merchant alone could keep a prequel busy for several seasons, because apparently one shipwreck can never simply be a shipwreck in Kildare. A new series could finally reveal how Captain Limbrey betrayed Denmark Tanny, how Tanny survived the sinking, and how the legendary gold quietly found its way to Tannyhill. Quite the inheritance story.

Then comes Denmark Tanny’s unfinished history, from the Cross of Santo Domingo to his abolitionist network and tragic execution, alongside the birth of the Pogue-Kook feud. The prequel could also expose how Ward Cameron built his empire and why Big John Rutledge became so consumed by treasure hunting. If Outer Banks is going backward, these are the secrets begging to be dragged along.
