Netflix Cancels Hit Series 'Bandi' Just Weeks After Season 1

From fan favorites to major hits, almost every show on Netflix faces the danger of cancellation until an official renewal confirmation arrives. Joining the list of cancelled shows recently is the hit series Bandi. The French crime drama unexpectedly rose to massive popularity upon its streaming debut on Netflix, but was cancelled after just its first season.
Although this is nothing new for Netflix audiences, Bandi is yet another show that fell victim to the streaming platform’s infamous cancellation curse.

The crime series Bandi arrived on April 9, 2026, with all eight episodes of Season 1 available to stream at once. But even before the series could complete a month on the streaming platform, rumors about its cancellation began making the rounds on social media. Finally, in May, Netflix confirmed that the show will not be returning for another season.
“A difficult decision that was not taken lightly,” Netflix told French site RCI.
What made the cancellation shocking was Bandi’s debut success on Netflix. It reportedly recorded 16 million viewing hours in its first week, which later increased to 40.5 million hours in the following week. While trending in nearly 57 countries, it also became the most-watched show on the streaming platform in almost 13 countries.
But as reported by What's on Netflix, the streaming giant claimed that the viewership numbers were not enough compared to the show’s production costs, which is among the several internal reasons for the cancellation. However, the streaming giant expressed its satisfaction with the first season created by Eric Rochant and Capucine Rochant, along with the cast’s performances. For those unaware, the show was filmed on the Caribbean island of Martinique using a local crew.
“We are extremely proud of Bandi,” the streaming platform said.
Much like Bandi, another fan favorite show axed last year, which caused massive disappointment among fans.
Why did Netflix cancel Boots?
Netflix released the coming-of-age series Boots on October 9, 2025, and it was cancelled shortly after its first season on December 12 of the same year. What puzzled many viewers was why the show was cancelled despite its popularity. Later, Ted Sarandos, during a conversation with Marc Malkin at the Directors Guild of America Awards, explained that the reason behind the cancellation was low viewership ratings.
“These are all business decisions based on audience relative to the cost of the show. Do the people who push play watch it till the end? Do they give it a couple of thumbs up? Does it keep growing? All of those things. That decision is made every day,” he said.

The show had a nearly 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and built a strong fan following. However, the lack of viewership ultimately cancelled a second season. So, while many titles arrive on Netflix, many also get axed quite quickly. Still, Sarandos admitted that cancelling any show is heartbreaking for the team, and the same happened with both Boots and now Bandi.
