Netflix Cancels Beloved Spanish Drama From 'Money Heist' Creator Just After 1 Season

A promising new chapter in Spanish storytelling seemed to be taking shape when Netflix introduced viewers to a high-stakes drama this September from the visionary creator behind Money Heist. The series arrived with the weight of expectation, drawing in audiences who hoped for another addictive blend of sharp writing, emotional depth, and unpredictable twists.

For a brief moment, it felt as if the platform had uncovered its next global hit, one that could follow in the footsteps of the streaming giant’s most celebrated Spanish titles. However, the series’ run came to an abrupt end when Netflix quietly canceled it after a single season recently.

The decision was made despite hints that the effort would turn into a series, making this development all the more disappointing for the masses.

Netflix axes promising Spanish thriller

Netflix has officially canceled Billionaires’ Bunker, the high-budget disaster drama from Álex Pina, the force behind Money Heist. The cancellation, confirmed by Spanish news outlet El País, comes despite Netflix positioning the show as a flagship title ahead of its September 19 debut.

The decision leaves the series’ dramatic cliffhanger unresolved, a disappointing outcome given that Pina had teased plans for how season 2 would have begun. Upon the debut of Billionaires' Bunker season one, he had confirmed in an interview with Espinof that the immediate aftermath of the finale was already mapped, making the cancellation even more frustrating for viewers who expected those developments to unfold.

While Billionaires’ Bunker drew 577 million minutes of views globally in its opening week, it lacked staying power and landed a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its strong pedigree, clearly, Billionaires’ Bunker could not match the momentum of Money Heist, which spawned 5 seasons. The show’s plot, meanwhile, is half revealed in the title itself.

Billionaires’ Bunker plot explored

Billionaires’ Bunker follows a group of the world’s richest people as they escape to a high-end underground shelter designed to keep them safe while the world teeters on the brink of World War III. However, once inside, things do not go as planned.

Tensions rise, trust slips, and unfulfilled business from when things were normal begins to surface, turning the bunker into a pressure cooker. The show quickly makes it clear that the real threat is not the war happening outside, but what the billionaires end up doing to each other.

Billionaires’ Bunker, getting canceled despite its fascinating plot and creator-driven approach, serves as a reminder that even the most promising projects are not guaranteed a long run on Netflix. Its abrupt exit leaves viewers with unanswered questions, but the platform’s ever-shifting priorities mean some stories simply will not get the chance to unfold. Still, Spanish storytelling is not slowing down on Netflix, with another title from the country already on its way, offering the masses something new to look forward to.
