Netflix Brings On Oscar Best Picture Nominee to Streaming Just in Time Before 2026 Academy Awards
It is no surprise that every streaming platform right now is busy capitalizing on the hype of the awards season. The streaming giants, particularly, are hard at work gathering as many Oscar-nominated titles as possible. Amazon Prime Video seems to be way ahead of the others in this regard, with titles like One Battle After Another, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, Sinners, Hamnet, etc. Netflix has also managed to bag Oscar nominees like Train Dreams, Frankenstein, The Singers, The Perfect Neighbor, and All the Empty Rooms.
But recently, Netflix has gained some speed with the addition of a critically acclaimed foreign film that managed to find a place in the 2026 Academy Awards.

Netflix has quietly added the much-appreciated Brazilian film The Secret Agent (also known as O Agente Secreto), which has been nominated for Best Picture at the 2026 Oscars. This Kleber Mendonça Filho directorial has also been nominated for the Best International Feature, Best Actor, and Best Casting at the top award ceremony, further enhancing its appeal as a prized addition to the streaming platform.
Wagner Moura plays Armando Solimões, a teacher in Brazil in the late 1970s who is trying to escape persecution during the last years of the Brazilian military dictatorship. He ends up taking refuge with other political refugees, struggling to survive with them. Carlos Francisco, Tânia Maria, Robňo Děgenes, Maria Fernanda Cádido, Gabriel Leone, Alice Carvalho, Hermila Guedes, Isabél Zuaa, and Udo Kier are among the supporting characters of the performance, making the espionage thriller even more engaging.
The Secret Agent made its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won numerous awards and received high praise from critics. Now, it is competing with some of the best Hollywood has to offer this year for an Oscar. Wagner Moura is also in the race for the top honor for Best Actor, for his nuanced, empathetic performance in the film.
The movie, since its release, has been frequently celebrated with various awards and accolades for its gripping storytelling and standout performances.
Awards and recognitions for The Secret Agent
While being nominated for the Oscars in different categories, the film has won the prestigious FIPRESCI Prize in the Official Selection - Competition category by the International Federation of Film Critics at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The movie was also given the prize for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2026 Critics' Choice Movie Awards. Apart from these, the movie has won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes in 2026.
It is also worth mentioning that it was nominated at the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Original Screenplay.
