With its principal couple and supporting players now taking shape, the series brings a popular romance property into Netflix’s expanding slate of book adaptations.

Icebreaker, the book, follows Stassie (Daisy Jelley), a competitive figure skater determined to reach Olympic gold, whose plans are disrupted when an accident forces her team to share a rink with the university’s hockey players. Nate (Connor Simos), a hockey player pursuing a professional career, becomes an unexpected complication as their rivalry gives way to attraction.
The story draws from Hannah Grace’s novel, the first installment in her three-book Maple Hill series, which is known to have spent 70 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and sold nearly five million copies worldwide.

The Netflix series, on the other hand, is being created by Jade Halley Bartlett, whose credits include Miller’s Girl and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Amanda Lasher, known for Gossip Girl and The Bold Type, serves as showrunner and writer. Unwell Productions’ Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre executive produce alongside Bartlett and Lasher.
Netflix has previously adapted romance novels into screen hits, and Icebreaker extends that strategy into the increasingly visible sports-romance space. With its newly expanded cast joining Jelley and Simos, the adaptation is beginning to assemble the ensemble needed to bring Grace’s campus romance, and its emotion on ice, to a new audience.
