On May 1, 2026, all three seasons of the canceled NBC sci-fi thriller La Brea were released on Netflix to add to the slew of sci-fi series already in its catalog. The series that was canceled by NBC in 2024 after the third season is a great treat for the subscribers with its unexpected twist on the umbrella genre.
The story, which was created and written by David Appelbaum, starts when an ancient sinkhole opens at the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, taking hundreds of commuters to a perilous prehistoric world in 10,000 B.C. As her husband Gavin and daughter Izzy look for a means to save them from the modern world, the story follows Eve Harris and her son Josh as they make their way through the primordial wilderness.
The series stars Eoin Macken, Natalie Zea, and Zyra Gorecki in the main lead. All 30 episodes from the show's three seasons are included in the online release, according to Netflix Tudum. La Brea, which ran between 2021 and 2024, is far shorter than many other network dramas, which makes it fairly easier to watch.
Since Netflix is bringing the show back after its cancellation in 2024, it raises the question of its cancellation in the first place.
What was the reason for La Brea’s cancellation?
La Brea debuted on NBC in 2021, but due to negative reviews, dwindling ratings in its second season, high production costs, and strikes throughout the industry, NBC decided to discontinue the series with a condensed six-episode third season that concluded in 2024. With an average audience rating of 46% over the course of its three seasons and only a 29% critic score in its first season on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although La Brea is not a top-notch show, it can be said that it is a strong contender for the classic "so-bad-it-is-good" genre that has long existed to address shows that have the potential to become cult gems. While there are a plethora of great sci-fi series on Netflix and many more are on their way, La Brea can be a different type of experience for sci-fi buffs who just want a breather from the good stuff.
