Netflix skates onto the BookTok hype train, turning Icebreaker into a series with Amanda Lasher calling the plays from behind the scenes. Young adult romance has become one of streaming’s most reliable power genres, with fandoms rallying around everything from campus love stories to enemies-to-lovers sagas.
Prime Video has already tapped into that space with hits like Off-Campus, proving there is serious demand for emotionally charged, slightly messy, deeply bingeable YA.
Now Netflix is stepping onto the ice with its own buzzy contender, betting big on one particularly icy story.

Netflix turns a BookTok favorite into its next YA obsession
Netflix is adapting Hannah Grace’s wildly popular novel Icebreaker, a BookTok sensation and the first entry in her Maple Hills trilogy. The story follows Anastasia Allen, a fiercely disciplined figure skater chasing Olympic dreams, and Nate Hawkins, a rising hockey star with his own professional ambitions.
The enemies-to-lovers dynamic sits at the heart of the narrative, blending competitive sports pressure with emotional vulnerability. What starts as a logistical inconvenience slowly evolves into a slow-burning romance that thrives on sharp banter and reluctant attraction. That balance is exactly what has made the novel such a viral favorite among readers.
To bring it to screen, Netflix has tapped Amanda Lasher as showrunner, leaning on her experience with character-driven storytelling and YA romance. Jade Bartlett developed and wrote the pilot and continues as a writer, giving the project a consistent creative voice. Produced by Unwell Productions with Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Meena Lefevre, the series is being positioned as a long-term player in Netflix’s young adult slate.
And Icebreaker is not the only frosty romance Netflix is spinning into must watch drama.
Netflix doubles down on icy romance with another skating story
Netflix is doubling down on its skating stories with the return of Finding Her Edge for a second season. The series quickly gained traction after its January debut, climbing into the platform’s English-language Top 10 and building a dedicated fanbase around its emotional storytelling. Its mix of competition, romance, and family pressure has made it a natural companion to projects like Icebreaker.

Based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s YA novel and loosely inspired by Persuasion, the show centers on Adriana Russo, a skater trying to rebuild her career while navigating the legacy of her family’s rink. Season 1 delivered both triumph and turmoil, culminating in a World Championship win that came with deeply personal consequences.
By the finale, Adriana chose authenticity over image, reuniting with Freddie and reshaping both her personal and professional path. The fallout sets up a reshuffled dynamic heading into Season 2, with new partnerships and heightened emotional stakes. With more competitions, deeper character arcs, and escalating drama on the horizon, Finding Her Edge reinforces Netflix’s growing investment in ice-bound storytelling.
