Netflix’s latest acquisition signals another calculated addition to its comedy pipeline, with the streamer winning a bidding war for AWOL, a new dramedy from the filmmaking duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The move comes as Netflix continues to balance original productions with strategic acquisitions, having added more than 50 licensed feature films and library titles on October 1, 2026. In an increasingly competitive streaming market, building a slate that mixes established creative talent with fresh concepts remains central to keeping subscribers engaged.
For Netflix, the appeal of a project is not always in how much it reveals upfront. Sometimes, the more interesting question is who is bringing it to the table and where it could fit into the platform’s expanding catalogue.
Netflix adds AWOL to its comedy lineup after a competitive bidding war
According to What’s on Netflix, the streamer has secured AWOL after a bidding war, marking an early win for its television comedy slate. The project comes from the filmmaking duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein who are associated with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the 2023 fantasy adventure that turned a tabletop role-playing game into an accessible, character-driven studio film. Details about AWOL remain under wraps, with the series currently described as a dramedy.

What’s on Netflix also reported that the series is written by Craig Rowin, whose credits include The Off Weeks and Apple TV+’s The Big Door Prize. The latter offers a useful point of reference for Rowin’s work, blending small-town relationships with an unusual premise and a more reflective strain of comedy. Although AWOL has yet to reveal its storyline or cast, its genre and creative connections give Netflix another project to develop within its growing comedy lineup.
The acquisition also places AWOL within a broader Netflix strategy of building relationships with filmmakers whose work can travel across genres. Rather than treating each project as an isolated bet, the streamer is assembling a catalogue where familiar creative names can attract viewers to entirely new stories.
How AWOL fits into Netflix’s expanding comedy slate
AWOL is not the only Netflix project connected to the wider world of fantasy filmmaking. The platform was also developing The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series from Shawn Levy. However, according to What’s on Netflix, the series reportedly has no connection to Honor Among Thieves and has now been scrapped. The distinction matters because the streamer is pursuing multiple adaptations and genre projects without necessarily building them into one shared narrative universe.

The acquisition also adds to Netflix’s increasingly crowded comedy pipeline for 2026 and 2027. Securing a project through competitive bidding can give the platform an early advantage in attracting sought-after creative talent, but development remains the real test. With no confirmed cast, storyline, or production schedule for AWOL, its eventual appeal will depend on how the creative team translates the initial concept into a series that can sustain audience interest beyond its announcement.
The series must progress through development, casting, and production before it can reach the screen, making a 2027 debut unlikely based on its current stage. A release in 2028 or later is a possibility, but Netflix has not confirmed a timetable.
For now, the bidding-war victory is an early signal of confidence rather than a guarantee of a near-term release.
