Moon Mission Goes Mainstream As Artemis II Launch Set to Stream on Netflix

Netflix has quietly turned into a one-stop destination for more than just binge-watching TV shows and movies. Over the past few years, the streamer has expanded into live sports, concerts, pro wrestling, and even built-in mobile games, steadily blurring the line between a streaming service and a full-fledged entertainment hub. That evolution is taking a truly cosmic leap as viewers around the world can sit back on their couch and watch humanity head back to the Moon in real time, right from Netflix.

As if a consolation for the missed Artemis II launch, Netflix is gearing up for the next best thing currently happening amid man's second leap to the moon.

NASA’s Artemis II mission is officially underway, but Netflix missed the opening act. The historic spacecraft's departure from Earth on April 1 was broadcast across traditional TV channels, NASA’s own platforms, YouTube, and other streaming services. Netflix, on the other hand, remained on the sidelines for the liftoff portion of the 10-day journey, despite its NASA+ deal.

Now that the Orion spacecraft is speeding past the halfway point between Earth and the Moon, the streamer is stepping in to host the mission’s most dramatic moment, the lunar flyby, where the crew will swing around the far side of the Moon and use its gravity to slingshot back toward Earth. A NASA representative has confirmed that Netflix will join other platforms in livestreaming this flyby, with a new notice appearing on the official NASA+ Live on Netflix page, which sits at the center of Netflix’s space-focused push.

This comes after a 2025 deal that brought NASA+ to Netflix. The partnership has so far produced only a single live stream on July 31, and not much else, making the Artemis II flyby a major make-or-break moment for the collaboration. Artemis II, in addition, marks the first time humans have traveled to the vicinity of the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972, and Netflix’s live coverage could turn that milestone into a global living-room event.

While the live lunar flyby brings history directly to screens, Netflix has already prepared viewers with a library of space documentaries.

Netflix space documentaries offer warm-up to Artemis II

Netflix has quietly built a small but compelling library of space documentaries that give viewers a taste of what is happening beyond the atmosphere. Titles like Apollo 13 Survival break down the harrowing near-disaster of the 1970 mission in episode-style detail, or Challenger: The Final Flight revisits the 1986 shuttle tragedy through archival footage and emotional interviews.

Netflix also leans into the modern era of spaceflight with docs like Return to Space, which follows SpaceX and NASA as they return human astronauts to orbit, and Countdown Inspiration4 Mission to Space, which follows the first all-civilian crew to circle the Earth on a SpaceX capsule.

Then there is Unknown Cosmic Time Machine, a short but rich look at the James Webb Space Telescope and how it is helping scientists peer billions of years into the past. Taken together, these documentaries create a mini space curriculum on Netflix, one that now feels like a natural warm-up for the real-time Artemis II flyby coming to the same platform.
