'Mindhunter' Could Come Back as 3 Films If David Fincher Approves Scripts
Mindhunter stands as a landmark in television storytelling, revolutionizing the serial killer genre with its unflinching psychological depth and historical accuracy. The Netflix series followed FBI agents pioneering criminal profiling in the late 1970s, drawing from real interviews with infamous killers like Edmund Kemper and Charles Manson.
David Fincher's meticulous direction elevated it beyond typical crime dramas into a cerebral exploration of human darkness. Despite ending after two seasons, audiences continue to clamor for more, drawn to its unmatched insight into the criminal mind.
Now, whispers echoing straight from it core suggest it could return as a trilogy of films.

Is there a Mindhunter movie Trilogy in making?
In June 2025, Holt McCallany shared promising news about the show's future during an interview with CBR. Having met with director David Fincher several months prior, Fincher mentioned the potential for Mindhunter to return in a new format, three feature-length films, each running two hours. Writers are currently developing scripts. However, the project depends entirely on Fincher's satisfaction with the material.
"He said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance, I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts," McCallany explained in the interview.
Mindhunter explored the early days of FBI criminal profiling in the late 1970s. Agents interviewed notorious serial killers to decode their mindsets. The series aired for two seasons, in 2017 and 2020, before Netflix paused it. The streamer released the cast from contracts due to high production expenses that outpaced viewership.
Fincher previously explained the challenges, noting the intense effort required for the second season. He replaced the showrunner, discarded multiple scripts, and closely supervised filming in Pittsburgh. McCallany expressed gratitude for his time on the show and optimism for a revival. He highlighted logistical advantages, as both he and Fincher have upcoming Netflix projects. Still, success requires perfect alignment of schedules and creative vision.
While the revival hinges on script approval, Fincher's current commitments add another layer to the timeline.
Fincher is currently immersed in his next high profile project
Holt McCallany recently revealed that David Fincher is currently immersed in his next high-profile project, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a standalone follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film reunites Brad Pitt as stuntman Cliff Booth, with Timothy Olyphant also returning as actor James Stacy, and an ensemble that includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, and McCallany himself, underlining Fincher’s pattern of assembling tightly coiled, character-driven casts.

The script, written by Tarantino, revisits the L.A. movie-world milieu of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but positions Cliff in a more grounded, neo-noir style drama reported to center on his work as a Hollywood fixer and the darker side of the industry. Netflix has positioned the film as a major event, with a teaser released in early 2026 and a projected 2026 run in theaters followed by a streaming debut.
Given Fincher’s hands-on approach and the film’s reportedly large budget, his schedule is heavily occupied through at least the next year, which directly shapes how soon he might revisit the Mindhunter universe. Mindhunter could come back as three films if David Fincher approves the scripts, but his busy schedule with The Adventures of Cliff Booth adds complexity to the timeline. The potential revival would expand the series' psychological depth into a cinematic format.
