Netflix is officially expanding its massive sci-fi universe with a brand-new live-action spinoff, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. This prequel series comes straight from the minds of franchise masterminds Matt and Ross Duffer alongside co-creator Kate Trefry, with visionary director Joe Wright steering the ship ahead of a 2028 premiere. Instead of heading back to Hawkins right away, the show dials the clock all the way back to April 19, 1955, touching down in Marion, Nevada, setting the stage before both the main series and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A newly dropped teaser keeps things suitably spooky, showing an abandoned bicycle parked outside a restricted midnight zone while a creepy, wormhole-like anomaly swirls in the night sky. However, it looks like fans have not quite taken to the idea of a prequel just after the end of the beloved sci-fi juggernaut.

The Duffer brothers have actually been cooking up this secret recipe since the summer of 2022. Set just a couple of years before the infamous Nevada experiment, this nostalgic detour is on a mission to tie up some major loose ends, including finally explaining that mysterious rock young Henry Creel stumbled across in the Nevada caves.

Eagle-eyed fans will also catch a clever auditory Easter egg in the newly dropped teaser: The Chords' classic tune 'Sh-Boom.' That exact track carries deep narrative weight, popping up in the fourth episode of the fifth television season when Max dives into young Henry Creel's high school memories in Hawkins - a school setting that first sprang to life on the theatrical stage in The First Shadow.

But all of this does not matter much if the fans are not responding well to the announcement.

Stranger Things prequel faces fan backlash

Things did not exactly pan out for Netflix as they intended with the announcement of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. The unexpected reaction most probably stems from franchise exhaustion, which might be because of the relentless projects from the shared universe being pushed one after another. The internet has rather rolled its eyes at the latest addition with a sour attitude.

“you guys just be milking this shit atp but im kinda sat,” commented one user.

“Just milking this franchise atp,” echoed the sentiment another.

“Guys. The show just ended in January. And already we’re discussing a prequel?? Talk about milking,” explained someone.

“Doing anything but redeeming the main series,” complained a user.

However, not all the comments were negative, and there are some who are genuinely excited for the prequel.

“Omggg I miss Stranger Things!! I’ll definitely be watching this,” exclaimed a fan.

“2028. I'm already clearing my calendar for the group chat meltdown,” shared another.

“WAIT IF THIS IS SET IN 1955 DOES THAT MEAN WE WILL HAVE MORE HENRY CREEL CONTENT,” enquired one user.

When tallying up the franchise's expanding footprint, Other Worlds steps up as the small-screen universe's sophomore television offshoot and its third major narrative expansion overall, factoring in the theatrical hit The First Shadow. Meanwhile, the animated companion series Stranger Things: Tales From '85, which bridges the gap between the mothership show's second and third seasons, has already completed a two-season run as it currently sits in limbo awaiting word on a potential renewal.
