Michael Jackson: The Verdict has shot to number one on Netflix, even as an organised fan revolt attempted to bring the platform to its knees. The docuseries landed at a moment when Michael Jackson's name was already everywhere, his music back on the charts, and his legacy back in conversation. Every boycott post, every cancellation screenshot, every petition signature, and still, the algorithm had the last word.
While the cancellations made noise, the viewing figures were busy making history, and the two could not have been more at odds.

Michael Jackson: The Verdict has claimed the number one spot on Netflix globally, pulling in 17.8 million views and 47 million hours watched, outperforming even Beckham, which managed just 12.4 million views at launch. The three-part docuseries, directed by Nick Green, revisits Jackson's 2005 child m********** trial, in which he was acquitted on all 14 counts. Its release landed strategically close to Antoine Fuqua's Michael biopic, which broke opening weekend records for a music biopic and pushed 'Billie Jean' to number one on Spotify, giving the documentary a ready-made, curious audience.
The backlash arrived fast and loud. Supporters flooded social media with cancellation screenshots, launched hashtag campaigns, and a Change.org petition gathered over 160,000 signatures demanding the series be pulled. Fans argued that Netflix was taking advantage of Michael Jackson's renewed popularity post-biopic, rehashing claims that a jury had already dismissed, and presenting a one-sided account of a case that ended in full acquittal. The documentary's audience score plummeted to 6% on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics rated it at 78 %.
While Michael Jackson: The Verdict ignited a subscriber revolt, the biopic that accidentally set the stage for it may be building toward an entirely different kind of sequel.
Is a second Michael biopic already on the way
Even as the documentary Michael Jackson: The Verdict drew fire, the biopic it shadowed continues to make headlines of its own. Michael pulled in approximately 97 million dollars domestically in its opening weekend, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody and Straight Outta Compton, and Lionsgate has hinted that a follow-up is not off the table. Jaafar Jackson himself told Entertainment Tonight that a sequel is already in the works, and the film's closing title card, reading "His story continues," left the door deliberately open.

The biopic ends around 1984 and the Victory Tour, skipping decades of Michael Jackson's career entirely, leaving a sequel with significant ground to cover. Lionsgate confirmed the creative team is already positioned to deliver more, pending the first film's performance, a bar it cleared spectacularly. Whether the sequel arrives or not, Jackson currently dominates both the multiplex and the most-watched list, acquitted in court and apparently undefeated on the charts.
