Mark Wahlberg has collected Hollywood occupations like other people collect frequent-flyer miles. From Marky Mark to Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights, he moved through action with The Italian Job and Transformers, earned an Oscar nomination for The Departed, boxed his way through The Fighter, and even showed his comic chops in Ted and Daddy’s Home.

Now, it seems Mark Wahlberg is adding another action-thriller chapter to that already crowded résumé with Netflix’s upcoming The Operator.

Mark Wahlberg to team up with The Rip's finest

Joe Carnahan is apparently not ready to let Netflix catch its breath. According to Deadline, the filmmaker behind The Rip has signed on to direct The Operator, an action thriller starring Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg plays an ex-Tier One Operator who now works as one of the CIA’s discreet clean-up specialists, which sounds like a career change with consequences.

Written by Harrison Query, The Operator throws Wahlberg’s covert operative into a particularly unpleasant assignment. His latest job is to escort the very target he hates most to safety, turning a routine extraction into a lethal cat-and-mouse chase. In other words, the mission has all the makings of a professional nightmare with bullets attached.

Aside from Deadline's exciting news, one would be glad to hear that Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona of The Picture Company will produce alongside Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Municipal Pictures, plus Scott Glassgold through 12:01 Films. Query sold his original screenplay to Netflix in December 2025 after a competitive bidding situation. Carnahan’s involvement also arrives as Netflix expands its relationship with the writer behind The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.

Mark Wahlberg's action hero chronicles

Mark Wahlberg has made a career out of looking like trouble has personally booked an appointment with him. From The Italian Job and Shooter to Contraband, 2 Guns, and Transformers, the actor has repeatedly stepped into muscular, high-pressure roles where guns, explosions, and impossible odds are practically part of the job description.

That action pedigree extends beyond fictional mayhem, with Wahlberg portraying military and law-enforcement figures in Lone Survivor and Patriots Day. His disciplined physical presence, sharpened by his early modeling and music career, has made him a natural fit for combat-heavy roles. And now, The Operator looks ready to put those credentials back to work.
