The new season of Netflix’s hit teen drama Never Have I Ever was released recently. The previous two seasons of this show were a huge hit, and the third is hitting the top charts already. Season 4 was completed earlier this month by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and the rest of the cast and crew. It is the last season of the show and got an emotional farewell. While the atmosphere wasn’t sad, it was bittersweet.

Maitreyi got much love for her role in the show with many calling her the perfect Devi. Everyone loved her for her acting in the series, and even her co-star, Lewison Karen has much faith in the actress’s career going forward.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was chosen out of 15,000 tapes

Finding an actress to play Devi wasn’t easy. The show’s co-creators, Lang Fisher and the exceptional Mindy Kaling picked Ramakrishnan out of almost 15,000 tapes because of this natural effect. Her audition was a lark, a not-very-serious attempt to become famous in the exciting weeks before graduation. She slips into Devi-isms with odd grace, easily but not thoughtlessly. This makes the wall between them soft, like water instead of glass.

Perhaps, it is this similarity that allows Maitreyi to portray Devi so well. But her acting skills are subject to praise even by her co-star Jaren Lewison. Lewison has grown to count Ramakrishnan as one of his closest friends throughout their four-season run. They talk often about life after Never Have I Ever. Both of them had just graduated from high school when they started, but now they are well-known Hollywood prospects who support each other at auditions. They face the challenge of making it in a field known for being rigid, demanding, biased, and money-driven, despite claims to the contrary made in the name of art and meritocracy.

Lewison admits “I have no doubt that if there’s anyone in my life that can change the world through this business, I’ve really put my money on her”.
