Little House on the Prairie is set in an unsettled region near present-day Independence, Kansas, where Laura Ingalls Wilder based the story on her family's real-life experiences. The novel follows the months the Ingalls family spent establishing a log cabin and farming the land in what is now Montgomery County, Kansas. Drawing from Wilder's childhood memories, the setting reflects the challenges and opportunities of frontier life during America's westward expansion, grounding the story in a rich historical backdrop.

After settling in Kansas, the Ingalls family's journey continued with several significant moves across the American Midwest. They had initially traveled from Pepin, Wisconsin, making a brief stop in Rothville, Missouri, before reaching the Kansas Territory. Following their departure from Kansas, the family returned to Wisconsin for a few years before resuming their westward journey, stopping in Lake City, Minnesota, before finally continuing to Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

Additionally, the novel is set in the latter part of the 19th century, and the events of the novel take place over the course of a year, spanning between 1869 and 1870. The story starts in the early part of 1869, when the Ingalls family leaves their home. By 1870, changing government decisions forced the family to abandon their homestead and abruptly end their time on the prairie.
