Baby Reindeer is one of the rare shows that brings a raw portrayal of trauma, obsession, and stalking. The man behind the show, comedian Richard Gadd, conveys his own experience and presents it in an eye-opening series of seven episodes. And the Netflix show brought Gadd immense recognition as an actor and writer. 

But apart from its professional success, the series played a role in his personal life. Nearly three years after Baby Reindeer became a global hit, Gadd opened up about the real sense of catharsis he found through making the show.

Richard Gadd recently appeared on Dinner's On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, where the two discussed their careers and creative journeys. During the conversation, Gadd spoke about Baby Reindeer and revealed how making the series helped him confront emotions he had long kept buried. He described the experience as a sense of catharsis, explaining that working on the show allowed him to process and move past some of those feelings.

"I look back at the person who had been through all that stuff and was so confused and so self-damning and self-hating and so adrift. I almost felt like I was like walking through life looking through a dirty window all the time, like I couldn't even connect with anything," he said. 

Baby Reindeer was adapted from comedian Richard Gadd's acclaimed one-man show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is based on his own experience of being stalked by a woman. Released in early 2024, the series quickly took Netflix by storm. Its success also thrust Gadd, who starred in and created the show, into the spotlight and changed his life, as he shared in the interview.

Gadd once also revealed that the show's impact extended far beyond its commercial success. He shared that many people began approaching him, hoping he could provide answers to them. 

Richard Gadd, the creator of Baby Reindeer, has been open about his own experience of being stalked by a woman. The actor shared that she followed him to his comedy shows, came to his home, and sent him thousands of emails, which is seen in the show. And this raw and honest storytelling perhaps made people approach him with questions.

“People were coming up to me in the street, almost looking for answers because of the raw honesty of Baby Reindeer," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Gadd added that he never wanted that kind of attention or the responsibility of guiding other people. He admitted that he had made plenty of mistakes himself and never saw himself as someone with all the answers. In an earlier interview with The Guardian, he also acknowledged that he never wanted to show Donny without flaws in Baby Reindeer. The series shows the tension, vulnerability, and poor decisions. Perhaps that honesty is one of the reasons why the show garnered so much attention.
