La Bola Negra is having the kind of festival season that makes the competition check its invitations. The Spanish queer period epic from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, better known as Los Javis, earned a 16-minute standing ovation and a shared Best Director award at Cannes before winning Toronto International Film Festival’s coveted People’s Choice Award. Now, Los Javis and star Guitarricadelafuente are set to be honored at Miami Film Festival GEMS.

With its Spanish box office also surpassing €25 million (roughly $29 million), the film keeps turning festival applause into serious momentum, and its latest recognition gives the celebration another reason to continue.

La Bola Negra to honored at Miami film festival

For Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the festival-season spotlight is turning into something more tangible than applause. The filmmaking duo, collectively known as Los Javis, will receive the Visionary Director Award at the 13th annual Miami Film Festival GEMS for La Bola Negra. Variety will present the honor on November 4, 2026, at Wolfson Auditorium, celebrating their work behind the camera.

The Miami recognition also puts the creative instincts behind La Bola Negra in focus, acknowledging a filmmaking partnership that has helped bring queer history to the screen. Los Javis will share the evening with their film’s breakout star, Guitarricadelafuente, who is receiving the Virtuoso Award for his acting debut. It is a particularly eventful night for the Spanish production’s creative team.

Beyond the trophies, the event will give audiences a chance to hear directly from the filmmakers and their leading man. Calvo, Ambrossi and Guitarricadelafuente are scheduled to participate in an extended in-person conversation moderated by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. The festival, hosted by Miami Dade College, runs from October 29 through November 5, making the awards part of a week-long celebration of cinema.

‘La Bola Negra’: Netflix Gives Spanish-Language Oscar Hopeful the Longest Theatrical Run in History

With La Bola Negra already building serious Oscar buzz through its festival run, the big question is which festival the film will take over after Miami.

La Bola Negra's upcoming festival runs

If La Bola Negra has made one thing clear this festival season, it is that the film has no intention of leaving the spotlight quietly. Its upcoming stops include the Newport Beach Film Festival, running October 15–22, and the Montclair Film Festival, which continues through October 25. The Spanish queer period epic will also appear at Middleburg and the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, extending its reach across key American audiences.

The itinerary gets another notable highlight at Miami Film Festival GEMS, running October 29 through November 5, where directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi will receive the Visionary Director Award on November 4. With Guitarricadelafuente also earning recognition at Middleburg, the film’s festival journey is giving its creative team plenty to celebrate.

After Miami, the question is which festival will become the next stop in La Bola Negra’s increasingly compelling awards-season story.
