Kevin Hart and Katt Williams Beef: What Was the Feud About? Time Line Explained

Published 05/11/2026, 12:36 AM EDT

Katt Williams took aim at Kevin Hart on a Netflix stage on May 10, 2026, ending over a decade of public jousting with a roast joke instead of a resignation. The rivalry began not with malice but with a stray remark about Shaquille O'Neal in 2014. What followed was eleven years of apologies, accusations, and at least one $5 million dare nobody collected.

The puppet allegations came first, then the d*** accusations, then a podcast detonation that quietly buried any remaining goodwill between them.

In August 2014, Katt Williams spoke to TMZ Sports and asked who the funniest athlete was, declaring that Shaquille O'Neal and Russell Simmons should get out of comedy and stay in their lane. Kevin Hart had not been mentioned.

Williams then called O'Neal a bum and announced, "Get out of here ya bum before I take the rest of your girls, like you took Kevin Hart from me."

Hart said nothing publicly and continued building a movie career.

February 2016 brought Williams to Philips Arena in Atlanta on his C******** T***** tour, where he called Hart a "puppet" and suggested audiences should not blame the puppet but the hand inside it, comparing Hart to Kermit the Frog and invoking Jim Henson as the real target. Hart responded on Instagram with a photo of himself alongside Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock at the Academy Awards, writing that true professionals understand the importance of sticking together.

March 2016 produced a $5 million challenge from Williams, issued ahead of the C********* T****** tour's Philadelphia stop, Hart's own hometown, daring him to a multi-discipline confrontation and claiming Hart only performed for play-play. Days later, Williams appeared on V-103 Atlanta's Big Tigger Show and retracted everything, saying he should never have mentioned Hart's name and that the Atlanta remarks were private thoughts never meant for the world.

One apology filed, one $5 million uncollected, and Williams already had a new target forming in his sights, one that would drag Hart back into the ring whether he wanted to be there or not.

2018

Katt Williams appeared on V-103's Frank and Wanda Show in September 2018 and questioned whether Tiffany Haddish had proven herself as a comedian, claiming she had not demonstrated the ability to perform for an hour. Kevin Hart, mid-press run for Night School starring Haddish, appeared on Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club and delivered a direct response.

"You had the shot. You were the guy. You were set up to be the star. You did not show up to work," Hart declared.

He pressed further, arguing that Williams kept pointing at Hollywood and the industry rather than accepting personal responsibility, and then landed the line that followed Williams for years: "He chose d****. Take responsibility for what you chose."

Hart also challenged Williams on mentorship, asking whether he had ever used his platform to lift up the people beneath him, and answered his own question with a firm no.

Years later, Hart admitted to Charlamagne Tha God that he regretted engaging at all, clarifying The Breakfast Club remarks were more about supporting Haddish in that moment than any genuine desire to address Williams directly.

Both men then retreated into their respective careers until one podcast appearance in January 2024 reignited everything with considerably more ammunition than before.

2024 – 2026

In January 2024, Katt Williams sat with Shannon Sharpe on the Club Shay Shay YouTube program and, across nearly three hours, made claims against Kevin Hart alongside several other targets. Williams declared that in fifteen years in Hollywood, nobody had a memory of a sold-out Hart show, a line for him, or a standing ovation at any comedy club. Williams then alleged that for five years, every film Hart made had previously been offered to him, and he had passed each one for content reasons.

Hart's reply to Fox 5 was seven words: "You don’t entertain the circus. You watch it."

He simultaneously used the moment to post the trailer for his upcoming Netflix film Lift, turning Williams' viral attack into free promotion. The efficiency was remarkable and entirely intentional.

On May 10, 2026, Williams appeared at Netflix's The Roast of Kevin Hart, a live event streamed as part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest, hosted by Shane Gillis.

"I am offering you an olive branch of peace. I want to be your brother. I want to be your friend. Can we move on?" At the close of Williams' set, Hart questioned.

Williams said nothing in return. He did not need to. He simply walked over, and the two men embraced, eleven years of noise collapsing into one quiet moment on a live Netflix stage. The crowd rose to its feet. Comedy's longest-running two-man show had finally written its last joke.
