Keanu Reeves has now stepped directly into Carl Rinsch’s explosive Netflix fraud scandal after submitting a personal letter asking Judge Jed Rakoff to show “leniency and mercy” during sentencing. The 47 Ronin director was convicted in December on multiple federal charges after prosecutors accused him of diverting nearly $11 million meant for Netflix’s unfinished sci-fi series White Horse into luxury purchases, lavish spending and risky crypto trades. Despite the conviction, Reeves still described Rinsch as an “exceptional artist,” suggesting the filmmaker often self-sabotaged by pushing projects far beyond their original scope until everything spiralled into chaos.
“In my opinion, Carl can self-sabotage by amplifying the scale, scope, and landscape of what had been negotiated, accordingly placing himself and his counterparties at odds,” Reeves wrote in an official character reference letter, as reported by Variety.
But the financial disaster surrounding the filmmaker is far from over. The court is now expected to order Rinsch to repay the full $11 million to Netflix, while the streaming giant is additionally seeking another $4.4 million in legal fees connected to arbitration battles and its cooperation with federal prosecutors during the investigation (via Variety). Rinsch’s defense team, however, has argued the extra legal demand is excessive, especially after the filmmaker was declared legally “indigent” and required court-appointed counsel during trial, before Keanu Reeves, who is also set to lead the Japanese stop-motion, publicly shared his support for the director.
And while Carl Rinsch’s courtroom battle continues dominating headlines, many people are only now discovering the bizarre unfinished sci-fi world at the centre of Netflix’s $11 million disaster.
The unreleased Netflix series behind the explosive scandal
Although White Horse, later renamed Conquest, was never officially completed or released, shocking details about the abandoned series surfaced during Rinsch’s federal fraud trial. The project reportedly revolved around futuristic human-like clone beings known as “Organic Intelligences,” artificially engineered to help humanity before eventually becoming feared by the very world they were created to save.
Inspired by elements of The Matrix, Star Wars, and Westworld, the story unfolded across dangerous “no man’s lands,” isolated walled cities, and violent conflicts between humans and the artificial beings. Even the title White Horse reportedly carried biblical symbolism tied to the First Horseman of the Apocalypse, representing conquest and false saviours.

Early footage, concept art, and production materials reviewed during the trial also revealed several ambitious scenes planned for the series, including futuristic auctions, experimental clone creations, and massive diplomatic convoys travelling between hostile territories. Netflix had originally ordered 13 short episodes and reportedly defeated Amazon, Apple, and HBO in a major bidding war to secure the project. In an unusually risky move, the streamer even granted Rinsch rare final-cut privileges, giving the filmmaker near-total creative control before the entire production eventually collapsed into one of Hollywood’s strangest modern scandals.
And now, with Keanu Reeves stepping into the chaos and fresh White Horse details continuing to surface, Carl Rinsch’s bizarre Netflix scandal is once again dominating Hollywood headlines ahead of its final verdict.
