Netflix locks Keanu Reeves to replace Alan Ritchson in its upcoming action flick Maelstrom. Hollywood casting shake-ups can sometimes completely reshape a high-stakes blockbuster before cameras even start rolling. When scheduling conflicts or creative shifts force a leading man to step away from a major project, finding a replacement with the right cinematic firepower is no small task.

Fortunately for Netflix's upcoming action slate, the streaming giant has managed to secure one of the genre's most iconic heavyweights, with Keanu Reeves officially stepping in to anchor the high-octane thriller Maelstrom after Alan Ritchson's departure.

Netflix taps Keanu Reeves for Maelstrom

Netflix's upcoming action feature, Maelstrom, has undergone a major leading-man transition, with action veteran Keanu Reeves stepping in to anchor the project following the sudden departure of Reacher star Alan Ritchson, according to PageSix. Earlier this year, Ritchson was announced to lead the project that has been in a limbo of sorts for almost 33 years.

Helmed by Carry-On director Jaume Collet-Serra, the narrative strands together a high-pressure scenario evocative of classic 90s blockbusters. The plot throws a Federal Marshal into a desperate fight for survival alongside an arms dealer's fiancée who is tucked away in witness protection. Trapped indoors as a violent hurricane batters their location, the pair must simultaneously fend off waves of armed mercenaries while battling the fierce elements raging outside.

Interestingly, getting this script in front of cameras has been a multi-decade journey. Originally snapped up as a spec script by Warner Bros. all the way back in 1993 under the supervision of executive Jeff Robinov, who now transitions to a producer role, the property languished in development for over thirty years, per PageSix report.

The movie seems to be finally hitting the floors soon, with just a few things still needing to be figured out before the cameras roll.

Netflix almost ready to order production start

Following foundational work by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick, writer Mark Bianculli (How to Rob a Bank) has stepped in to refresh the screenplay for Maelstrom’s current home at Netflix. With its primary star and director now locked down, casting for the female lead is expected to be the next major milestone before production kicks off.

Even though Alan Ritchson has stepped away from this particular action vehicle, his creative partnership with the streaming platform remains fully active through an upcoming slate that features a high-speed MotoGP racing thriller, an intense outdoor competition series, and a follow-up to War Machine. The actor has had a rough year with the separation with wife, Catherine, and the viral altercation with his neighbor.
