Kate Winslet has long been drawn to characters who carry storms beneath the surface. From the global phenomenon of Titanic to the raw, complicated world of Mare of Easttown, the Oscar-winning actor has built a career on performances that linger long after the screen fades. Whether in film or television, Winslet continues to seek stories that challenge her creatively. Now, her next chapter brings her into the world of the acclaimed team behind Netflix’s Adolescence. 

From intimate family dramas to gripping thrillers, Winslet continues to follow stories that push her into unexpected territory.

Kate Winslet will star alongside Maxine Peake in The Unheard, a new five-part limited series for Netflix from the team behind Adolescence. The series is directed by Lebanese filmmaker and screenwriter Mounia Akl. It will also be produced by Warp Films, Matriarch Productions and Plan B.  

The companies are also responsible for Adolescence, which became an Emmy-winning hit and established the creative team’s reputation for ambitious British television. Winslet will also act as an executive producer on the series. The series, written by Jack Thorne, will follow two sisters who go on the run when an act of vengeance goes awry.

Described as a Thelma & Louise-style revenge thriller, The Unheard will explore what motivates two sisters to do something impulsive. The series was announced by Netflix U.K. content chief Anne Mensah, at the Edinburgh TV Festival as part of the latest tranche of UK commissions from Netflix.  The Unheard will start shooting next year.

The new series is part of an ambitious new wave of Netflix U.K. productions, with Kate Winslet returning to the streaming platform following her recent Netflix outing with Goodbye June.

Kate Winslet’s last project, the Netflix family drama Goodbye June, was her feature directorial debut. She directed and stared in the film which was about four adult siblings reuniting at their mother’s bedside in the hospital amid grief and family tensions. It stars Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough, Johnny Flynn and Timothy Spall. The screenplay was written by Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, and the film was released on December 24, 2025. 

Winslet, who might appear in Adolescence Season 2, is taking on another ambitious project with The Unheard, which is a compelling story with a strong creative team. The series gives her the chance to explore a darker, more intense character, working with some of the filmmakers from Adolescence. The project is further evidence of Winslet’s continued desire to take on new creative opportunities in front of and behind the camera, having recently turned her hand to directing with Goodbye June.
